My cars all of the sudden would not start. I checked for fire which I had. I believed it was a fuel problem so I changed the fuel pump, which had no effect. I have changed the rotor in the distributor and the ignition pack, which had no effect. Then I had a friend plug a code reader into it and I really doubt he knew what he was reading because I did not, he said it had a bad connection on the computer. The thing is right after he unplugged it the car started running. It ran good for two weeks and now it is back to not starting again.

Hi, I went out and started the car this morning and it started right up. It was very cold out.I drove to my sons school which is maybe a mile away. The car drove fine. I left the car running while I ran into the school to get him. When we got back to the car it had stopped running and when I tried to start it up it wouldnt start. Sounded like the battery was dying. Got a jump, took a few tries but it started up. After a few seconds the radio shut off and when I tried to roll down the window it was very slow. I tried to take the car home, as I was driving it was having issues. Sounded like it was going to stop running but didnt, I would push the gas and it wouldnt go, we were barely moving. When we stopped there was a small amount of smoke coming from tail pipe and had a slight burning smell. Help! No clue what this could be. Thank you

Hi htolman,

Did you check the temperature gauge at that particular moment?

Check if coolant level is sufficient in radiator. Sounds like you have overheated the engine.

If you are able to crank and start now, then might be due to a failing alternator or its wiring circuit resulting in no charging voltage.

I have a 1999 Honda Accord EX that won’t start. I pulled it up on my car ramps to change the valve cover gasket, oil, oil filter, brake master cylinder, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor button, battery top post claps. Once I put it back together and tried to pull the car off of the ramps it would not start. It will turn over until the battery is dead but wont start. I think I hear the fuel pump on in the background when I turn the key to the on position, but not sure. What am I missing? Please help.

Verify you have the plug wiring order correct. Verify that the cap and rotor are properly installed. Make sure it's getting spark to the plugs.

This is most likely a problem with some of the work that you have done. You need to make sure that you have all the wires in the correct places and that all the wiring connections you removed (if any) have been put back correctly.
It is very easy to get the wires in the wrong spot on the cap.

Hi roy guthrie,

Thank you for the donation.

You need to perform test to find out what is missing causing the non starting.

Click the " First Things To Check " link at bottom of post to get an idea what to look for.

If fuel is the cause, check if the fuel pump starts priming for 2 seconds when ignition is turned ON.

If fuel pump does not seem to work, give the fuel tank some tapping to judder the fuel pump to see if it starts working.

Hi keith54,

Which fuse did you blow?
Are the dash indicators lights showing when ignition is turned ON?
Did you test the distributor for battery voltage supply?

Have you checked for spark and compression? You need all three for it to run. You will also need to actually verify the fuel pressure at the injectors. Just hearing the pump does not mean it is actually putting out the pressure it should.

Try those as a start.

I just had the friend plug the code reader back on it and he said it's not reading the codes from the ecm to the pcm? I believe that his device seems to be more like a scanner. As it said fuel ready. Misfire no. Then several checks just said n/a which he interpreted as not available.I just don't have the funds to take it to a repair shop but it looks like that's the only way it's going to get fixed although I thank you very much for your time and knowledge.

I have an accord that won't start. Was running fine before, then just wouldn't start the next day. The fuel pump is running and it's getting gas. It's not getting spark at the plug. I replace everything in the distributor except the cy sensor and it didn't work. I was told that it could be an ingnition switch issue. I also noticed spark bouncing around inside the distributor while cranking the engine with the cap off. Can anyone help me with this issue?

First of all. NEVER crank the vehicle with the ignition cap off.

Have you replaced the rotor and cap? Also, did you remember to put the little block cover that goes behind the rotor back on?

I replaced the cap and wires a while ago. Replaced the rotor the other day with all of the other new components (coil, icm, button). I'm not sure what the little block cover is. Is it the little coiled up thing with the metal contact in the center (magnetic)?

I have the car listed above lx model that someone cut off and stole the catalytic converter from. I was able to drive it home, but it has been about 2 months and now it will crank but wont start. I put a new battery in it and it still will crank, crank, crank, crank, but wont start. Will not having a catalytic converter and a downstream OÂ sensor make my car crank but not start? Or what could it be?
