Yes I have spark. Grounded the negative side of the coil with a test light to negative terminal then crank the engine and the test light blink as I crank. That's a test for the igniter I think

Yep it sounds like the igniter has failed, they had big problems with those on that car.

  • 1987 TOYOTA CELICA
Computer problem
1987 Toyota Celica 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Manual 160000 miles

I have a 87 toyota celica that just will not start. It turns over but will not start. The CAR DOES HAVE SPARK

I have already done the following

new timing belt with correct timing
Checked fuel pump
distributor
spark plugs and wires
replaced mass air flow sensor
replaced ignition igniter
checked all fuses
replaced the battery for a new one.
New EFI relay
all the fuses have been checked and good

did the diagnostic code and I received a 5-1 for the tps or computer. I do not know if I need to replace the computer also I am not sure if this one needs to be reprogrammed because I am replacing parts for resale shops due to the price of these parts. Most of these parts range in the 400-500 dollar range.I really need to get my car running and I really do not know what to do next.

Did all the starting problem start after the new timing belt or before? If after, double check that timing again, you may be off 180 on the placement of the distributor, then try unplugging the TPS to see if it will start without it.

The timing belt was changed before all the problems with the car and the timing was checked on the car and everything is correct. Will the tps cause the car not to crank?

Engine Mechanical problem
1986 Toyota Celica Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I need a list of things to check as to why it wont start.
It turns over, barely almost fires, but nothing. I'm not a car person, and of course the husband can't figure it out. He's in no hurry because he HAS a working car. I'm stuck with the celica. So, I intend to prove that I can fix it. I don't have a book that has all the pictures of the parts of the engine. Please help me do this and show him up!

Start with the basics, fuses, spark plug wires, spark plugs, spark, cap and rotor, coil, igniter, compression. You can go to autozone. Com and register to use their repair manual section. I found it to be an excellent, FREE, repair resource. Let me know how it goes.
