Starting problem

When this problem occurs, do you hear one kind of loud clunk from the starter? If so, if you keep cycling the ignition switch repeatedly, will it eventually crank?

Thank you for including all your other observations, but in this case, you might have a common problem that's not related. If you hear that one loud clunk from the starter, and cycling the ignition switch will eventually get it to crank, suspect worn contacts in the starter solenoid. They can be replaced for 20 bucks, but most people just replace the entire starter motor. The problem will get worse over time. I ignored this on my mother's '95 Caravan until they day she lost count after 700 tries and a blister on her thumb before it finally cranked!

Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Dodge Magnum V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 146000 miles

Engine turns over but will not start. Produces a smell likes it is flooded, but no pressure was put on the excelerator. When it did this before, it ended up starting, and ran fine after a rough start. It has been sitting for a couple of days, and the outside temperature has varied from the thirties to 40 and 50 and back down. When it starts "right", it cranks only a couple times, and fires right up, with no pressure on the gas pedal. Please help. I am at a loss here.

First thing I suggest is to test fuel pressure with gauge at the fuel rail.
