Should be a bolt up catalytic converter, not a big job. Even if it is a unit catalytic converter it still will be a bolt up. May be get a specialist exhaust repairer to investigate the catalytic converter and exhaust first and get a quote.

As I said, we've already replaced the MAP sensor.

My regular mechanic just had to diagnose this issue with my own Rav4 ('96). The actual issue WAS the crank sensor -- but the problem was not directly related.

The nearby wire harness had come loose with age, and at certain combinations of speed and RPMs (2nd and 5 gear were worst), would vibrate to the point where it could swing far enough to hit the belt.

The belt would then launch the harness in an arc which would -- at the end of the trip -- make contact with and confuse said crank sensor to the point where the car would begin to stall.

The harness has since been "harnessed".

Did you ever find the problem with the rav? I have a 1996 with exactly the same problem. Would love to know the solution.
Thanks

This post was over 10 years ago so it is unlikely that they will respond. The best thing to do is probably start a new post with your specific info and we will do what we can to get it resolved. Thanks
