Timing/Tuning problem with a CJ7

My earliest cars all had a manual choke; sometimes you forgot to push it back in and the subsequent poor performance would remind you to do so.
While I was pulling out of the driveway, I rememembered that the jeep very often died on me doing this (going up an incline in reverse, stopping on the incline, looking whether it is clear to enter the streed - and DEAD; restarting with the car on an incline, burning tires, then driving forward). Drives much better now; the little hesitation can be overcome by giving more gas; once it is at running temp, it's fine. I just ordered that replacement part from NAPA; I will put it in, connect it, and if it's fine, it's fine; if not, I can live with this. Not a biggie.

Regarding tuning the carburator: that will be the next step after the thermostat is installed, and hopefully the weather is nicer (I work outside, remember).

The water pump the same: I need courage, time, and warmer weather. Right now just making sure the cooling fluid is always at maximum level.

My Outlook program just alerted me that an email arrived from you. Lemme check

Well, the jeep is running fine. There it sits in front of the house (that's a redwood tree on the right the power company keeps in a mutilated state so it won't bother the power lines)

Thanks for the jokes. This device arrived today from NAPA and I will replace the old choke with this.
As you see, it has only one electrical contact, so I will most likely leave the old wiring the way it was.

In the meantime that old CJ is running better than ever before: If you play with the gas the first 5 minutes after it started or even less, when you moving again from a complete stop, there is no problem. After it is warmed up, no problem either. It runs with so much pep, I am amazed.

I had new tires installed a few months ago, and they must have inflated them quite well: with that truck suspension you feel now every bump in the road.

Still leaking cooling fluid, though. That waterpump will need to be worked on.

BOSS,

SINCE NEITHER ONE OF US KNOW HOW TO FIGURE OUT IF YOUR ORIGINAL CHOKE ELECTRICAL STUFF IS STILL THERE. AND YOU ARE AS LOST, AS I AM, IN FINDING IT!

I WOULD DEFINITELY >>>NOT<<< TIE BACK INTO YOUR RESISTANCE WIRE TO THE COIL (WHERE SOME GOOFUS TIED IN BEFORE). IT DOES NOT PROVIDE 12 VOLTS, AS NEEDED BY THE CHOKE HEATER.

ALSO YOU NEED SOMETHING, THAT DIES, WHEN THE KEY IS OFF

I AM SENDING YOU A MODIFIED WIRE DIAGRAM VIA YOUR E-MAIL, SO YOU CAN ENLARGE IT AND SEE BETTER.

I SELECTED A GOOD 12V FEED, "HOT" ONLY WITH KEY ON, YOU CAN TRACE BACK TO AND TEST WITH YOUR VOLTMETER. THIS THING SHOULD PROBABLY CUT OFF AFTER YOU REACH OPERATING TEMP.I HAVEN'T FIGGERED THAT PART OUT YET, WITHOUT FINDING AND USING THE ORIGINAL GOODIES TO IT!

I WOULD PROTECT THE NEW CIRCUIT WITH MAYBE A 5-10 AMP FUSE (EXPERIMENT, 5 AMP--1ST!). USE 16 GAUGE WIRE TO RUN TO THE CHOKE WIRE (PROBABLY OVERKILL).

I AM SENDING AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO RIG IN A FUSE, ON THE NEW WIRE, CLOSE TO YOUR SPLICE.

2 INSULATED FEMALE CONNECTORS AND A 1980s STYLE "SQUARE FUSE"DISREGARD THE REST OF THE PIC

SEE PUP. SEE WILLY AND PUP. PUP LIKES TO RIDE. ME TOO!

MANUAL CHOKE IS REALLY SOUNDING GOOD NOW. HUH?

Thanks for all that! Great graphics!
But. I just spent an hour trying to match those diagrams with the vast array of multicolored cables - all hidden away in plastic protectors with a slit.

Still not sure what what is.

It ain't easy.

Nice picture of the puppy. You still have cover on the jeep. Must still be cold in SC; here only the nights are cold, otherwise it is spring

Sending you a '79 Diagram, much is the same for surrounding years, I painstakingly took them to "Paint" Colored all wires correctly with the exception of "WHITE" and if the wire had a "Tracer" (stripe) I sorta dotted it with black (even though it made no reference to what color, the stripe was) YOU CAN NOW EZily, Follow wires! (Just remember '79 might have slight differences!)

I'm gonna get the office supply to blow them up for me---really big, then I will Mate the 2, into 1 big poster!

This may help you some,

If I send the wrong one (I experimented several times), or you see a problem I missed, let me know so I can fix it!

Sending them NOW!

Wow!
You must have spent hours in coloring that wiring diagram!

I'm in awe.

Now I have to take that diagram to help me understand reality

All right, I have to give up. I can understand all the wiring diagrams, even understand the logic behind them, but for the life of me cannot translate them into this mess of wires bundled nicely into those plastic wrap arounds.
I guess what I am looking for is a big arrow pointed to a photograph of the wires of my jeep saying: here you need to splice etc.

The waterpump out of a sudden looks more doable: it's just static mechanical forcesto be loosened and tightened again.

I guess you'll have to drain all the cooling fluid; you'll just collect it and will put it back at the end? Why waste it. So it's $50 for a new water pump, a learning experience vs $480 in the shop.

Since I tuned the jeep myself, it's running better than ever before. Probably should touch those 2 screws on the carburator, although deep down I have some reservation; but - knowing nothing else but to give the jeep to the shop before - I have the feeling being involved more the jeep might do better

YOU CAN DO THIS BUDDY!

WHAT'S GONNA SORTA SCARE YOU IS THE BRACKETS THAT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE TO GET TO IT. MAYBE UNDOING STUFF ON OTHER ITEMS TO GET IN THERE. IT'S JUST A "THING"!

TAKE PICS AS YOU GO IF YOU FEAR YOU MIGHT MESS UP. HAVE BUDDY WATCH TOO!

PLACE YOUR BOLTS AND NUTS ETC ON A CARDBOARD BOX, IN CLOCK POSITIONS, AS I DID WITH TRANNY/ TRANSFER CASE PICS (WANNA SEE AGAIN?). I USED NAILS TO KEEP NUTS AND WASHERS FROM FALLING OFF THE BOX.

THIS THING IS NOTHING MORE THAN A "REVELLE" OR "MONOGRAM" PLASTIC AIRPLANE MODEL, THAT YOU PUT TOGETHER AS A KID.'CEPT YOU ACTUALLY GET TO "FLY IN IT" WHEN YOU ARE DONE!

IT'S JUST BIGGER-HEAVIER PARTS. A LOT OF THE TIME, EZer TO ASSEMBLE!

SAVING THE JUICE IS FINE, IF IT'S NASTY OR NOT IN THE SAFE ZONE (TESTING WITH ANTI-FREEZE/ COOLANT TESTER) YOU MIGHT WANT TO REPLACE IT.I MIX MINE 70% ANTIFREEZE/ 30% WATER, OUT OF THE JEEP AND THEN, POUR IT IN TILL FULL, ADDING MORE LATER, USING THIS THEORY, ALWAYS MAINTAINS 70/30---NO MATTER WHAT. NO GUESSING. ALWAYS CORRECT!

YOU KNOW I WILL BE HERE TO ASSIST, AND YOU KNOW YOU CAN COMMUNICATE REAL TIME VIA LAND-LINE, AS WE DID IN YOUR PREVIOUS POST. LAST TIME IT WAS NOT SO MUCH AS FOR HELP, BUT I COULD REALLY SENSE THE PROUDNESS, THAT YOU WERE ABLE TO CONQUER STUFF, WITHOUT SENDING IT TO A SHOP. HAVE YOU MISPLACED THIS INFO. DO YOU WANT ME TO RE-SEND MY INFO VIA MESSAGES?

AS FOR THE CHOKE--MANUAL WOULD EASE YOUR PAIN FAST, FEWER PROBLEMS, BUT IF YOU INSIST, I WILL GO ACROSS THE STEET AND ATTEMPT TO FIND YOUR ITEMS ON RON'S '83 CJ-7 AND TAKE PICS OF HIS. GIMME SOME TIME FOR THAT, HE WORKS NIGHTS, HARD TO CATCH HIM.

YOUR TURN

Cold weather and heavy rain put everything on hold. Should get better next week or so. I will be out of the country for a month or so in 2 weeks. My son, who took care of the jeep while I was in Europe for nearly 2 years and who used to work as an automechanic in his younger years and did a lot of work on the jeep while I was gone, doubts that it is the waterpump that is leaking, but whatever is behind the waterpump is leaking. To get there I would have to take off the harmonic balancer, etc. I guess that is way of my league.

Naw, not too hard to do! Maybe $15 in tools.I do not think it's necessary to remove it.

Use an inspection mirror or Mama's Compact, should be able to see the whole underside of the pump.

I suspect it's the Weep hole dripping.

Are you sure "not too hard to do"? Remember I haven't worked at all on cars before, and whenever I do it, I prove Murphy's law: Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

I will try to make a movie clip of the jeep running cold and then after being driven for some time, so you can hear it; hopefully this program here will allow me to attach it
