I am sorry but it's raining quite heavy right now (at least not snowing as it is in the South); so the pictures might have to wait. Tomorrow morning I must be early off to work; hopefully in the PM I will get you the pictures.

BTW, I rechecked the timing; it's like the photo I sent you -now under strobe light - right at TDC with a +8 degree advanced timing gun.

Removed the oil cap to test vacuum; I don't know how strong the vacuum should be; there was gentle suction on a piece of paper; it was negative pressure, but not too much; maybe this is normal

I hope this message is transmitted (the last one failed). It's raining quite heavy here in Walnut Creek, so the pics will have to wait till tomorrow. Tomorrow morning I am off early to work, so it might be late afternoon.

Regarding diagrams: remember I have both the Clymer and the CHilton manual.

I just retested the timing: dead center on TDC with the vacuum disconnected and the timing gun 8 degrees advanced, while the RPM is at 700.

Removed the oil cap and tested for vacuum; there was negative pressure but not strong; I don't know whether the paper placed over the inlet should be removed with difficulty or with ease.

ROGER,

MY TRANNY LOOKS LIKE A SURVIVOR, MY TRANSFER CASE IS NOT LOOKING REAL GOOD INTERNALLY, DRAINING TRANNY, JUST GOT HIM UP ON 4 JACK-STANDS---I'M ATTEMPTING TO PULL THE T.C. WITHOUT MAKING IT EZ, BY DROPPING THE SKID PLATE---FRT "U" JOINT REMOVAL IS HARD TO ACCESS. TAKING A BREAK RIGHT NOW

2 YEARS AGO (18 DEC 08) BROKE RIGHT FOOT AT WORK, GOT CAST OFF. GOT BLOOD-CLOTS---"LOVENOX" SHOTS IN THE BELLY AND "KUMADON"----FOOT RE-BROKE WEEKS LATER (WEAK MEND)----SURGERY. HAVE 4" SCREW NOW, AND A BLOOD-CLOT FILTER IN MY ABDOMEN, LOOKS LIKE IT HEALED, HAVE ONE MORE WORKERS COMP DR. APPT IN FEB---DOC RELEASED ME FOR WORK 26 AUG 10----THEY SAY "NOT ENOUGH WORK"---I BELIEVE ITS."YOU MESSY US UP WITH WORKERS COMP. FOR 1-1/2 YEARS". BUT THATS JUST MY WORTHLESS OPINION!

WHILE LAID UP (TWICE, TOTAL 8 MONTHS---AND TOLD IT WAS "EVIL", JUST TO TOUCH MY POOR FOOT ON THE GROUND, I STARTED MESSING WITH THE "CYBER BOX"---I CANNOT TYPE, I HUNT AND PECK SLOWLY.I KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT WHEN I STARTED. THIS IS MY WIFES COMPUTER, I NOW HAVE A LAPTOP IN MY ARMY ROOM (ALBUMS!)

THIS IS A HOBBY, I ASKED A QUESTION AT 1ST TOO, THEN I GOT HOOKED, I SAW THE CJ JEEP PEOPLE COULD BE TAKEN CARE OF A LITTLE BETTER THAN QUICK-PASTED IN ANSWERS. SO I STARTED MY CRUSADE.

I DID NOT SIGN UP AS AN "EMPLOYEE"--CAUSE I AIN'T A "ASE CERTIFIED" MECHANIC. IMMA PLUMBER WITH MECHANICAL SKILLS, MESSED WITH VEHICLES GROWING UP.I JUST DO THIS AS A HOBBY---AND IT KEPT ME FROM GOING CRAZY, WHILE LAID UP.I DO ANSWER OTHER QUESTIONS FOR OTHER VEHICLES, BUT I TRY TO STAY WITHIN MY "MEANS".I HAVE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE ON THESE NEWER COMPUTER VEHICLES, BUT I AM SELF-TEACHING AS I GO!

SINCE I DID NOT WORK LAST 2 QUARTERS, UN-EMPLOYMENT STUCK ME ON AN EXTENSION FROM A CLAIM YEARS BACK. IT WAS 20 WEEKS, I GOT 2 LEFT.

I WAS TRYING TO GET MR. JEEP OPERATIONAL FOR WHEN I GOT A JOB. NOW HAVE A DELAY, I STILL HAVE "WILLY" (NO SIDES AND NO DOORS) AND I HAVE 'LIL RED (NEON, I GAVE $250 FOR IT, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE AN EMERGENCY CAR, STEP DAUGHTER USED IT FOR 4 YEARS. THIS WAS WHILE SHE WAS "GETTING BACK ON HER FEET" (CONFUCIUS SAYS, " ONE MUST GET OFF THEIR BUTT, TO GET ON THEIR FEET), LEFT HER "ANTI-MIDAS TOUCH" ON IT. ITS NOT A REAL "MANLY RIDE" ANYWAY. NOW YOU KNOW WHY I HAVE SO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS!

NOW BACK TO YOU---I WANT TO KNOW WHAT PART NUMBER AND "TITLE" YOUR CHILTON IS

ALSO--THIS TIMING THING IS NOT COMING ACROSS TO ME WELL---ARE YOU USING AN "ADJUSTABLE TIMING GUN (LIGHT)"----I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IF THIS IS THE CASE!

I DO NOT UNDER STAND THE PART WHERE YOU SAY : dead center on TDC with the vacuum disconnected and the ))))))timing gun 8 degrees advanced((((((, while the RPM is at 700.

THE GUN SHOULD BE SET ON "ZERO"---AND YOU MOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR, TILL YOU SEE 8 DEGREES BTDC, FLASHING IN THE STROBE LIGHT AT THE HARMONIC BALANCER MARKS

AN ADJUSTABLE TIMING LIGHT IS REALLY SORTA A HIGH TECH WAY TO CHECK YOUR "ADVANCES"I DO NOT HAVE ONE! I USE OLE RELIABLE, AND CHECK MY STUFF THE OLD WAY----AS I DESCRIBED TO YOU FURTHER BACK IN THIS POST

I'M SORRY I MAY HAVE MIS-LED YOU ON THE TECHNIQUE---IT STILL REMAINS THE EXACT SAME PROCEDURE (PLUGGING LINE AND ALL), JUST DO IT MOVING THE DISTRIBUTOR---GUN MUST REMAIN ON ZERO

IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WITH A PLAIN-JANE GUN, THIS MIGHT MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER, TO USE THEIRS!

I CAN IMAGINE THE CONFUSION YOU MIGHT BE HAVING, IF YOUR TECHNIQUE WAS CONFLICTING WITH MINE!

ARE WE ON THE SAME PAGE NOW. OR ARE BOTH OF US IN DIFFERENT BOOKS STILL?

STILL WANT THE PICS!

NEXT TIME YOU TAKE A "GLAMOR SHOT" YOUR JEEP/ HAVE THE SUN BEHIND YOU!

YOUR TURN

1. Sorry to hear about your medical problems. Fractured foot is no picnic, blood clots develop in immobilized legs; lovenox injections are good and safe, coumadin is cheaper and easier to take, but that they put a filter in means that you kept throwing clots while on coumadine or lovenox? Anyway, they are safe.

2. I hope your struggle with worker's comp and unemployment benefits turn out to your advantage, and that you will be able to continue with your profession. Those are not easy times.

3. The Chilton is # 40202 entitled: CJ/Scrambler 1971-86 Repair Manual.

4. Yes, I used an adjustable timing gun; now I set it to O, tuned again, and the settings were (they are so DAMNED hard to see) at +2-3 degrees; advanced to + 8 degrees which to me is a tad counterclockwise from the valley bottom between peak +5 degrees and + 10 Degrees. Seems to run better.

5. Before that (had to use the sunlight before it disappeared) I took the photos. I would have no way of telling you where on this carburator the idle screw or idle screw mixture screw is. My first car (in 1966) was a French Renault 4, with a Solex Carburator; that thing I could adjust; it also had a float which occasionally got stuck; a knock with a hammer got the car going again and left usually a great impression on a female passenger.

7. There is a leak of what seems to be coolant in the last pictures; that might explain why I have to keep refilling the Prestone.

8. Good luck with your transmission

Just off the subject: this is a Renault 4 from 1966: four cylinders, front wheel drive; windows were just slid open; the gear shift was like a walking cane you pushed and twisted. That thing clung to the road, you couldn't flip it over. And it was so light, that once I had problems I could push it to the next village (maybe a mile or so) without breaking a sweat

OK,

SEE THIS ONE LEAK, ALL OTHERS TOO HARD TO SEE IN DARK (RETAKE PICS)

I IMPROVISED MY PIC, IT'S SIMILAR TO YOURS----IF THE HOSE CLAMP IS NOT YOUR LEAK----BACK HOLD BOTTOM BRASS FITTING (DO NOT LET IT MOVE) AND UNSCREW "STEEL ELBOW". REPLACE IT.A SIMILAR BRASS ONE WOULD BE BETTER. IT WON'T RUST OUT, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET ONE AT A PARTS HOUSE, "NAPA" USUALLY HAS A GOOD SELECTION OF FITTINGS

TAKE THE OLD ONE WITH YOU AND ++++++BE SURE, THE THREAD PATTERN IS THE SAME! (HAVE THEM VERIFY)+++++USE TEFLON PASTE ON THE THREADS TO REINSTALL++++++++AGAIN, BACK HOLD, DO NOT LET THE BRASS FITTING, BELOW, MOVE AT ALL. DO NOT OVER-JUDGE TIGHTENING (AND CANNOT MAKE IT BACK AROUND!)

I HAVE NOT FOUND YOUR CHOKE HIGH IDLE STEPS, I NEED CLOSE-UPS AROUND THE CHOKE BI-METAL SPRING HOUSING----I ALSO NEED TO SEE YOUR MIXTURE SCREWS (I WILL SHOW A 6 CYL's MIX SCREWS IN A PIC)

I WILL POUR INTO MY BOOKS MORE, ON THE 304 LOCATIONS, HARD TOO SEE AFTER THE "BIG CRY" I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH!

IN THE MEANTIME, REALLY LOOK AND TUG ON VACUUM LINES---REPLACE BAD ONES, OR CUT OFF A BAD END AND RE-ATTACH

ARE YOU CONFIDENT THAT YOU ARE TIMED CORRECTLY? IF NOT WE WILL GO 'ROUND AND 'ROUND TILL ITS RIGHT.I KNOW I'M NOT THE BEST EXPLAINER.

Pretty cool car!----I was "3" when it came out!, I guess we posted about the same time, cause I didn't see it earlier!

Are you comfortable working with me, or do you hear them Banjos a playin'?

Can you GRASP my explanations, through all the stuff I'm shoveling along with it?

Has "drivability" improved now that I HOPE, you are timed right?

We will get thru this, and you will be able to work on him yourself with confidence soon!

Vacuum, Timing, Carb Adjustments and you should be set!

Let me know when you're ready for some more abuse!

This is my latest Lottery Win......Go Figure!

It is late and I am going to hit the sack soon. Thanks for the pics (how did you find that leaking piece so fast?) And the directions to the idle adjustment screw. Tomorrow I rented a U-haul truck to get all the accumulated waste out of our backyard; I will scan a picture out of the original 1980 owner's manual with the timing marks and there is only TDC, valley, 5 degrees, valley, and 10 degrees - everything between is guesswork.

BTW, you wouldn't know how to put a replacement clock in the jeep's dashboard? The previous owner bought a new one, as the old one is racing too fast, but never installed it. It's been sitting here for 10 years. I am beginning to get the jeep more respectable: a new glove compartment was ordered as the old cardboard one simply disintegrated.

Anyway, more to you tomorrow.

BTW, you know that the design of your Willy's jeep has been accepted as one of the artforms of man.

If you go to in Germany to the museum of exhibits of postwar Germany from 1945 to present, it starts with a Willy's Jeep just like yours: this was the symbol of new beginning and everybody seems to understand. A jeep is special and American

Been out trying to get 2 vehicles back on the road!

No need to scan the manual, I know the "V" your are referring to on your timing scale (as long as you are at: "Best Guess" all is well!).I was just scared you were not Timing correctly (you asked out of the ordinary questions!) Questions Like: "Do you want me to put it on TDC?"--"Do you want me to pull the spark plug out to get it on TDC?"--"Do I need to unplug the spark plug wire?" (I guess, I assume everyone is on my Jeep page!)

DO YOU FEEL CONFIDENT, THE TIMING IS RIGHT NOW? CAN YOU INVOLVE A UNBIASED PARTY, LET THEM READ MY STEPS (OR YOUR REPAIR MANUALS STEPS), SEE IF WE ARE WALKING THE SAME TRAIL?

I will get you a pic of what you "MAY" be dealing with the clock (It's basically, just another gauge, just a pain to get to!) I do not have a clock, so I will "wing it”, W/ Pics of another gauge.

Since I am sorta Computer Stupid--Taking your pics and putting with mine, turns out, when I take them to "Microsoft Paint" to Modify them and send back.I must "Blow them Up". Thus the DISTORTION, when I send your pics back, modified. Maybe I will figger out a EZer/ Better way. For now, thats all I can do!

On to the "MAN CAVE"!----Description of my TOO MANY PICS!

I have a few manuals; I have them for other rigs from the past, some of family's cars, etc. I do not have a "CLYMER" (Not even heard of it! I'm Isolated from society!). My "Chilton's" are not the same 'printing' as yours (I thought maybe I could refer to page #s to you) I'm sure the Content is 99% the same, just a little different order!

I try to get my hands on every available Manual I can, for my Jeeps!

I guess you did not like "Referencing Parts and Pics from a marked pencil and it's eraser" Idea (My Grand-monster in the Pic)?

I did not take care of my best (1979 AMC JEEP SERVICE MANUAL), as you can see, I sorta threw it a around when I was Younger. Now yearn to find a "NEW-VIRGIN" replacement at a "ON-LINE Car Manual store"

My buddy has a large shop and does Ductwork as a side job, many of my Major Modifications, come together at his shop. (That's Our "Beer Joint", minus the Alcohol!). Other-wise I'm in my 2 car garage doing stuff (I am tooled up well here too)

You can see the "Sheet-metal Double Decker Glove Box" of mine. The Decals on the dash are actually "stickered" onto Refrigerator Calendar flat magnets and cut out. They are Re-arrangeable and removable!

In the MIRROR reflected pic, you are looking at my VOLTMETER (center screen) from behind---off to the left, is the rear of my speedometer.I feel your clock is installed similar to my voltmeter gauge, A mirror may help you figure out how to access it. Your clock may be on the other side of the column where its real tight!

You can see how I keep up with oil changes.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST PACK ALL OF YOUR JEEP STUFF IN YOUR JEEP, AND MAKE A TRANSCONTINENTAL TRIP OVER TO HERE. WE'LL HAVE YOU FIXED UP IN NO TIME.I PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS (according to my old Daycare facility)!

Took 5 attempts with this, E-net keeps going down

Want your Carb pics Closer different angles

We can move on to "Tweaking" your Mixture screws----DO NOT JUMP AHEAD. Yet!

Still got the Tach/ Dwell Meter handy?

YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO WORK ON NEXT. Just found out Evil Females Rig is gonna cost $1600-$1700 to fix REVERSE. Can't live with 'em. Can't live with 'em?

Just got back from the landfill; dumped 1 U-Haul truck full of junk that has accumulated next to our garage; $75 for the U-haul, $120 to dump it.

Sorry about the repair costs of your wife's car.

I liked the picture of your grandson (?)And the idea; I am only a little bit thick in understanding and was looking initially for a pencil in one of your motor pics and thought eraser might be a technical term.

My oldest son is good with cars; he will be over this Saturday and I will let him check the timing.

Till then everything will be put on hold, because job issues have come up that I need to deal with plus things around the house that have been neglected for too long; at least that's my wife's opinion.

So I will be back Saturday with a progress report. The jeep is running and gets me without problems from point A to B. The rest is icing on the cake.

I love your computer stand made out of old ammo boxes; is that a real M-16 the ranger figure is holding?

Actually thats a "New" Old Field Desk, You remove the Desk's top, fold in the leg and then it latches on the front of the file drawer portion--then it looks like a Steamer trunk w/ handles

The rifle is a AR-15, All the same as a '16, except it's Semi-Auto only, Rangers do the one shot--one kill thing, full auto is a waste anyway, I just had to have one, after I finished Basic training (1982), Bought it with some of my enlistment bonus! It's my Baby, and I am "One" with it. Mr. Mannequin only holds it for V.I.P visits. Only I can get to it's clandestine location. My Brother-In-Law, kept all of weapons in a glass gun case. Made it really EZ, when they stole case and all. NOT GONNA HAPPEN HERE!

The albums I sent you, should have the entire room (360 degrees) And a lot of it was described in the captionsAnd the same goes as well, all of the Jeep Modifications albums I sent, If you didn't get all of them, I can re-send.

OK, waitin' on you (No rush), I'll get to work on Mr. Jeeps Transfer case!

I'm back. Restested timing: idling at 700 RPM it is advanced 8 degrees. Runs well, except there is a slight hesitation when you step on the gas: in the morning when cold that hesitation lets the motor die when you step on the gas and let the clutch engage; afterwards when hot it is just a tad of a hickup before it accelerates, barely noticeable unless you are sensitized.

The only thing that bothers me right now: when I reattach the vacuum hose to the distributor, the advance stays at 8 degrees. I was concerned that there might be a kink in the nose as it makes nearly a 180 degree angle when it leaves the distributor and so I installed a new one. No difference

Roger,

You are probably attached to "Ported Vacuum"---It only "Comes Alive" when you start cracking the throttle open (Not revving on up, as you saw with the Centrifugal Advance. Advancing.

Sorta got 2 ways to tell if it's working, the best being TEMPORARILY "Tee-ing" into a "Live" (constantly sucking line) while watching the timing light. This way you actually see the advance.

The other way can be done the same way, except no Timing gun is neededHook TEMPORARILY to a "Live Vacuum Line" (or just leave it hooked to the "Ported line" you are hooked to) and Watch the "ARM" behind the "Bell" on the Distributor, if its moving, when you open the throttle, the VACUUM ADVANCE is more than likely working.

Most of the time, if there is a Vacuum Advance problem, the "Bell" (with the t. It), doesn't pull the arm.

I will explain the reason for advance, in a Understandable, Country hick way, when I return.

The hiccup maybe be a Carb adjustment issue, WE WILL GET THERE SOON!

Let me know about the Vacuum Advance!

I have to admit my ignorance: I would not know where there is a constantly sucking line (I thought they all were), nor can I identify an arm behind the bell on the distributor.

I guess people who use the service 2Carpros are usually savvy with the fundamentals of auto mechanics; I am feeling more and more out of my element, and that makes it hard for you, too.

1ST PIC----MY VACUUM GAUGE/ FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE (ALL IN ONE) AND COMPRESSION GAUGE

2ND PIC---CLOSE UP OF VAC/ FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE

3RD PIC--ONE OF THE "MANIFOLD VACUUM PORTS" ON MY 6 CYL 4 BBL MANIFOLD.(THIS IS NOT HOW MINE IS ACTUALLY HOOKED UP, THIS IS JUST FOR SHOW!)

4TH PIC---THIS IS THE SET UP TO "TEE IN"---IF A VACUUM LINE IS LEFT OPEN IT AFFECTS THE AIR/ FUEL MIX----THATS WHY WE ALWAYS HAVE IT HOOKED TO A VAC OPERATED PART/ A GAUGE INSTALLED/ OR CAPPED OFF COMPLETELY!

5TH PIC--SHOWS GAUGE INSTALLED PROPERLY--THIS ALLOWS THE VAC OPERATED ITEM TO CONTINUE TO WORK AND USE THE GAUGE!

YOU CAN REMOVE THE GAUGE AND TIE A LONGER LINE IN, AND PUT FULL MANIFOLD VACUUM (TEMPORARILY) ON YOUR DISTRIBUTOR FOR A TEST!

I'VE EVEN "VACUUM SEALED" SOCKS AND OTHER ITEMS IN ZIP-LOCK BAGS, USING VAC FROM THE "PCV" HOSE!

6TH AND 7TH IS YOUR PIC MODIFIED WITH VAC LOCATIONS

NORMALLY IF YOU ENGINE IS WORKING PROPERLY, YOUR GAUGE WILL READ A STEADY "20 INCHES" OR BETTER (BIGGER NUMBER)----PROBLEMS CAN ALSO BE SEEN AND DIAGNOSE WITH A VAC GAUGE, IF THE NEEDLE PULSATES, GOES UP AND DOWN ETC ETC, THESE READINGS CAN BE COMPARED TO A BOOK TO DIAGNOSE SOME ENGINE ISSUES----IT IS NICE TO OWN A VACUUM GAUGE!

IT JUST TAKES A WHILE TO GET ACCUSTOMED TO ALL OF THIS "HIGH TECH" STUFF!

Ok,

I guess on the 304, it's not exposed as with the 258

This is MY 258 6 cyl distributor in the pic, the vacuum operated arm is exposed and can be seen when it moves when vac is applied

I just went to Autozone Online, this is your distributor, Your arm is covered up (unless maybe the 2 screws will reveal it, I REALLY THINK THE 2 SCREWS HOLD THE BELL ON, and are not a cover!)

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Cardone-Reman-Distributor/1980-Jeep-CJ7/_/N-ilwczZ93xku?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=DISTRIBUTOR&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=152942_0_10500_

So, looks like the only way for you to insure VACUUM ADVANCE is working, is with the Timing Light, as you VERY SLOWLY hook it's T.I.T (off and on several times for effect) to "Live or Manifold Vacuum" to watch it Advance.

When the test is over, insure all lines go back where they came from.

This will all make sense soon and just "Throttling It", will make the PORTED VACUUM come on and you will see this without changing to Manifold vac for a test.

I am now going to explain "THE REASON FOR ADVANCE", below

These are the tools I have in the meantime; luckily my son was here and with the jeep running at 700 RPMs and the vacuum hose disconnected from the distributor, it was set at + 8 degrees, but simply hooking the vacuum tube back up advanced it by 4-5 degrees.
Follow up report:
It starts immediately, then dies, starts again, dies, starts again, runs well, except at stops you have to really hit the gas pedal first and then engage the clutch, not simultaneously, as it will fall into a vacuum, die or rapidly come out of it, and accelerate. After 2 minutes driving this problem no longer exists.
Still need to test the vacuum. I have the tools now
