Good morning.

What is the battery voltage?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-load-test

This could be either dirty battery cables or a bad starter if the battery checks out.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/everything-goes-dead-when-engine-is-cranked

Can you upload a video of the noise when you try to start?

Roy

Started a month ago problem persisted so we replace the battery. Ran foe several weeks ust fine but now its doing it again. What is is doing is:
Sometimes you get in and turn the key and nothing happens. Other times it starts just fine. Yesterday it finally came to a head. It would not start so friend jumped the vehicle and we drove it to their house.
Car would not start after that, not even with a jump.
Replaced solenoid next to the battery, did nothing. That alternator guage inside the car show positive like it should, when the car is running.

Hi
I need you to test something. If the starter isn't working, have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for 12 volts at the smaller wire at the starter. Let me know what you find. This will tell me if the starter is the problem or we need to go to the relay. Also, make sure the ground wire to the engine block is tight and clean.

Shut the car off and it would not start, it just clicked. Replaced the starter cylinoyd on the fender well. Stil got the click, not like a low battery just a single click. Removed the starter and had it tested at the parts store. It tested good, they tested it three times. What else could it be?

Real common problem is corroded battery cables but you have to look under the insulation near the ends. The next step is to measure the voltages at various places while the solenoid is activated, either with a helper turning the ignition switch or you can run a jumper from the battery positive to the small terminal on the solenoid.

Yesterday, I stopped to get gas and left the radio on for my kids. When I finished with the gas, I went to start the truck and I just hear one "click". Keep trying and that's all I get, the one "click". I towed it back home and still the same, "click". So I get up this morning and get ready to start pulling the battery, starter, alternator, etc to have them checked. I think I'll try starting it again, and what do you know, it starts right up like nothing was ever wrong. I've only had the truck for a few weeks but it's run fine other than eating up the gas. So, what do you think is the cause? Now I'm worried to drive anywhere in fear that it might not start once I get somewhere. Thanks.

Load test the battery and make sure its cleaned and tight both ends of cables. Could also be a problem with the start circuit-ignition switch, starter relay, starter and back lamp switch, and starter itself.

Hello, well first make sure the battery connections r nice n tight. Then check the ignition relay solenoid or also called starter relay. Its close to your battery and one of your battery cables go connected to it u cant miss it, its brown round and has two battery size cables connected and one thin wire on the bottom. To chek it just put the ignition key in on position and leave it like that. Now with a screw driver make contact on the 2 big wires wich is power and negative. Not the small one dont touch that one. With the screw driver just touch one of the wires or screws and at same time contact the other and it will make ur engine turn. With key in on position if the engine fires up and starts then u will need to buy a new solenoid. If not chek ur starter. Hope it works out for u. By the way always have ur parking brakes on for safety.

Check starter
Ensure battery is fully charged and in good condition. Ensure battery cables and connections are in good condition. Measure voltage at starter solenoid battery cable terminal. If voltage is less than 12 volts, recheck battery cables and connections.
Service as necessary.
Connect one lead of remote starter switch to starter solenoid battery cable terminal. Connect other lead to "S" terminal on starter solenoid

I would start by making sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. Also, make sure the ground that goes from the battery to the engine block is clean and tight. Finally, have you had the battery checked? If everything I mentioned above looks good, remove the battery and have it load tested at a parts store. Most will do it for free. If it is good, let me know and I will explaine how to check the starter.

Let me know what you find.

Engine Mechanical problem
1991 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

I just got a 91 Explorer Sport 4x4 5speed 4.0L from my brother today. When he bought the vechicle someone put a bronco II transmission/flywheel/clutch assembly in the vehicle. He was having starter problems with the teeth lining up. He went and put a new flywheel/clutch assembly, a rebuilt Explorer trans. New driveshaft, new clutch master cylinder, new correct starter (correct by the parts store) and had a trans. Shop do all of this work. Everything was great and all of a sudden the starter started to grind when trying to start the suv. He replaced the starter 3 times and they all seemed to work great for about 2-3 weeks and then it would start to grind again.

My question is, I now have the suv and do not want to keep sinking money into starters every few weeks. Does anyone know what could be wrong with this explorer? I have not taken the time to check the starter or flywheel yet because it is raining outside.

Thanks!
