I was not letting the car idle and it cut off like I had turned the switch off. It turns over and acts like it wants to start but will not start.

Perhaps you popped the fuel pump fuse.
Can you hear the fuel pump run for about two seconds once you turn the key to run, before you turn the key to start?
If not check fuses 1, 2 and 10 in the fuse block, left side of the dash.
2 is for the fuel pump and 1 or 10 should be for the fuel injectors just in case the fuel pump does run.

So this has a carburetor and not the tuned port fuel injection?
Okay, have you checked for a spark yet from either of the spark plug wires?

Okay, make sure you have a spark, then also look down the carburetor air horn with the air cleaner off, use one hand and snap the throttle open quickly and see if you can see a quirt of gas down into each front barrel.

It sounds as though you probably got the distributor wet. I suggest you remove the distributor cap and dry out the inside and try again.

I like to keep the engine running when I am power washing the engine so if the engine starts to stutter or misfire, point the washing wand away from the engine until it picks back up, then see what I was getting wet and remember to stay away from that. But I can tell you to try to stay away from the ignition as best you can and the opening to the intake or air cleaner if it is exposed.
