Jump started my lawn tractor yesterday with the Buick, no problems. Got back into car a few hours later, engaged key absolutley nothing. No clicking no sound at all. Battery is fully charged, can jumper solenoid on starter, starter engages. Checked fuses in car and under hood all appear ok. Disconnected battery to see if that would help, nothing. While under car noticed starter was dirty and oily, worth taking connections apart? This is driving me crazy, please help.

So you jumped the the starter solenoid to the battery cable on the starter and the starter kicked over?Do you have a multimeter or test light?

I believe this is the model with 2 positive cables on the battery stacked together. It is common for that connection to corrode and cause this. It is the only thing I can think of that relates to what you did.

I thought I had a bad battery. They checked it out and said it had 12 volts but the cranking amps were really low. So I got a brand new one with 1000 cranking amps, put it in, and absolutely nothing! I checked all the fuses in the panel, and all appear fine. I have a problem that I thought may have partially caused the no start one. The shift rod that has a little round end that fits over a nipple would come off on occasion. The shift in the car would just be really loose when this happened, and all I needed to do was open the hood and pop in back on. I tried a tie wire to hold in down, and that worked for a year or so, but then it started popping off the nipple again. Would this have anything to do with it not even making a sound when I turn the ignition key? I mean, the new battery can't be it, and it's installed properly. Of course the lights and everything else are strong. Is there an emergency swith in the trunk or somewhere that I need to reset? Please help! Thank you very much, Ray

Hello, does your vehicle have a theft system? That can cause problems.

If you have an automatic, the neutral switch, gear select switch, whatever they call it, can also cause problems.

The small purple wire at the starter solenoid should be hot with the key in the crank position?

Yep, there are 2 very thin wires in the lock cylinder that break and disable the starting system. It requires disassembly of the column to replace the lock cylinder assembly.
You will need a shop for this unless you have steering column expierence.

I don't know! You're the mechanic not me. I was hoping you would say, yep, just open the trunk and you'll see a switch and yada yada, or, let me know if the shifting rod can casue a misconnection somewhere in the starting system.

Sorry, I can't see your car from here. All I can do is suggest what to test. You have to do the testing.

Electrical problem
1983 Buick Lesabre V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my battery is reading around 12v. I had my altenator tested at autozone. They told me it was good? When I try to start the car, I hear the starter engage and if I hold it in start the starter tires down. No crank. Could this be an ignition switch. A few days ago the isturment cluster was blowing fuses then popped now wont come on. The battery lights been on also. Could all these problems be realated?

Welcome to the forum. I'd have to make sure he battery has a full charge and the connections are good. With everything turned off, use digital voltmeter across posts. The generic spec for a full charge is 12.6 volts. Take a second reading across battery posts, engine running, if you can get it started, the second reading should be higher than the first, if the charging system is working. The charging system needs to be checked on the vehicle. The alternator my test fine at the store, but, if there is a problem with wiring circuits to or from the alternator, it won't charge on the vehicle.

There's several ways the oil can leak out of the engine.

There could be a leak in the oil pan, crankshaft rear manin seal, timing chain cover, valve covers, or even the oil drain plug could be loose.

If your engine is smoking a lot, then it could be leaking into the cylinders of the motor and out of the tail pipe. Though that would use up your oil a lot slower than in a couple days.
