Hi,

We can't give up. I noticed in pic 1 is the distributor. Is that correct? If so, one of those hoses should go to the base of the carb. The two plugged in pic 4 appear to run between the EGR modulator and the outer vent control valve. I also noticed that three of the steel lines in pic go to the EGR modulator. Two of them are on one side of it and the third is 180 degrees away. Did you notice that?

There are two rubber vacuum hoses coming from the distributor attached to two 1/8" metal tubes (pic 1) that appear to be going to the carburetor. These two metal tubes cannot be specifically traced to the carb because they join another header of several tubes wrapping around the carburetor (pic 2) in tight areas that cannot be accessed with clarity.

In pic 2 the red arrows point to the header of metal tubes that the two metal tubes from the distributor join in with. The yellow arrows in pic 2 show that there are rubber vacuum hoses connected to the carburetor from the metal tubes header. But it is impossible to know where they are going to.

As for your comment, "the two plugged in pic 4 appear to run between the EGR modulator and the outer vent control valve. I also noticed that three of the steel lines in pic go to the EGR modulator. Two of them are on one side of it and the third is 180 degrees away. Did you notice that?" I do not understand what any of this means. I do not know anything about what or should not be with this.

I am out of ideas on what to do.

Hi,

I was wondering if you were able to trace the ones from the EGR modulator. See pic below.
In the areas where you can't trace the steel lines, disconnect a few hoses on both ends and force low air pressure through one at a time to see if you can locate the opposite side.

Let me know.

Hello again, I finally found a mechanic who fixed my problem. It was not vacuum related, every mechanic I talked to led me and you to believe!

The Toyota dealership who replaced the carburetor told me that it was a vacuum leak that they could not identify. Which is what brought me to you guys.

Please tell me if this sounds right:
This mechanic said that "there were 3 electrical connections to the carb, two hot and one ground. One hot was to the choke. The hot to the choke was connected to the ground and the ground was connected to the choke. So, the choke would not work." Is this accurate? And is it possible to connect a ground to a positive and a positive to a ground on the carburetor without it arcing out? And the engine still starts and runs?

Whatever the case, my truck is now running like the day it was new (or better). Getting at least 45+ MPG! That's right. I said 45+ miles per gallon, this is not a typo. The mileage was 363,400 when I filled up the 10-gallon tank. I am now at 363,845 with about a quarter of a tank still to go. So, what was the expected gas mileage for a 1987 toyota pickup 22r with a 5 speed transmission? This is unbelievable!

So obviously, my problem was the choke due to a wiring connection.

Again, I want to thank you for all of your dedicated help on this matter. I hope to get a detailed reply from you so that I can go back to the dealership about this.

Hi,

Thank you for the update and yes, it is possible for the wiring to be switched and it still run. You mentioned why wouldn't it arc. If the key was in the off position when it was connected, there wouldn't have been power to it. So, you wouldn't have noticed an arc.

This makes perfect sense. Also, that is great MPG. I wish my truck would get that much. LOL The best I can do on the highway is 24 MPG.

Regardless, thank you for letting me know. Also, feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome here.
