Electrical problem
1996 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Manual 155, 00 miles

within the last 2 wks. My car was beginning to become hard to start I thought it was the battery, so I tried to replace it and the alarm system went off, my daughters fiance disconnected the alarm module and cut the starter wires that was suppose to keep my car starting and twisted them together. Then the car wouldn't start. Found out that the starter was bad, replaced it. The car finally started and had turned it off and on at least 4 times that night just fine, only to go out the next morning and it wouldn't do anything. The car has a humming noise coming from the fuel injector, so don't think there is anything wrong there, but don't seem to be getting any ground to my solenoid. Can my ignition switch be the problem? Or did I do something wrong when I let him disconnect the alarm system? Can you please help

Are you getting power to your start when you crank the engine?

Do you have battery voltage to the starter? The starter is the ground. It is grounded to the engine or trans.

The battery is brand new. When first put it in the car cranked over and started. Was on the rough side though. That's the main part that we don't understand. The car not only started 3 times after the new starter was put in, but made it 3 !/2 hours aways to my sisters house. Now it doesn't seem to want to crank over. About a week before I replaced the starter I had a problem with the lights not coming on. The emergency brake light was on even though my brake wasn't on. I had to pull over and turn the car back on and finally the lights came on and the emergency brake light went off. Still puzzled why I can't get it started though.

So. Do you have battery voltage to the starter? I would be thinking either a bad starter or a bad connection.
