Transmission will engage in drive and sometimes not?

Sometimes the car will engage in drive and sometimes not. It will also disengage while driving and just rev up. Clean and full Transmission fluid. I had to go back and forth from neutral and drive just to get it home.

Hello,

First and foremost, the CAN system will need to be scanned. Do you have access to a scan tool to at least pull codes from the CAN system? They can be ordered for around $20 or more on Amazon. Preferably a tool that can monitor live data, as we can see the pressure changing when the car is moved from gear to gear.

When the car does engage in Drive, does it shift normally? Likewise, does the indicator indicate which gear it is in correctly? When it "falls" out of gear, does it still indicate the previous gear or has the gear indication changed?

P0732 code on scan tool. Working on getting a live reading. Also, it shifts normally when engaged.

Hello,
P0732 : GEAR 2 INCORRECT RATIO, which only occurs when 2nd gear is missed or does not engage at all. This has to happen consecutively for it to flag a code. This can be caused by things like stuck valves, electrical issues with commanding the valves, or friction material building up in the transmission. And of course, worst of all, a failing transmission.

First, let's check the transmission fluid. Is it brown / black and smelling burnt? You can try to change the fluid as a potential fix, but it can also adversely affect the transmission if the fluid has never been changed. Can you manually shift the car into 2nd gear, and will it engage and drive? Also, is your scan tool capable of seeing the transmission shift solenoid operation? If so, I would monitor the voltage going to the solenoid while driving to see if the operation is normal.
