Transmission not engaging

my 2002 Ford Escape v-6 came out of gear while driving. It will go into park but not engage any other gear. Am I looking at something simple or catastrophic?

I would start by checking the linkage. Make sure it is properly adjusted. Make sure the fluid is full and clean. If it is, you need to have the computer scanned to see if there are any trans codes.
