Engine Cooling problem
1997 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 172K miles

I have a 97 grand am that overheats quickly and the fan doesn't work. Every now and then while i'm driving suddenly the engine cools way down leading me to believe the fan came on so I don't know why would it come on once in a while like once every 4 days for a few minutes then stop? A wire? Is this something I can fix? Is it hard to take the fan out and work on my self? (I'm a girl wilth limited help and my boyfriend knows NOTHING about cars and would probably do more harm than good)

The fan should be easily removed. Once you take it out you can check it by using 2 jump wires to your battery to give it direct juice if it spins then that is not the problem. Once you resolve the fan problem you may want to check your thermostat or coolant sensor for the underlying problem that caused your fan to stop working. Good Luck
