Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Based on the codes you provided, I feel the problem is related to the camshaft position sensor and not the crankshaft position sensor. The codes indicate a misfire on cylinder 6, a misfire within the first 1000 revolutions of the engine after starting and a camshaft sensor failure, which leads me to the P0340. That indicates a camshaft position failure bank 1. That will cause the misfire (p0306) and the P0316 to set.

With that, and I can't be 100% certain without being there, it seems the camshaft position sensor is causing all of the codes.

With that in mind, I would start with that sensor. Here are the directions for replacing it. The attached picture shows its location.

___________________________

CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Remove the components in the order indicated in the illustration and table.

INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

____________________________

Now, on your vehicle has two sensors. You need to replace bank 1, which is on the side of the engine which has cylinder 1. If you are facing the engine from the front of the car, it will be the left side. I attached a picture of cylinder locations. The arrow points toward the front of the vehicle.

It will be located below the valve cover as indicated.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

I cranked the car and it sounds like it is trying to start but it does not. I press the gas to try and help it start and it does nothing at all. I just got my oil changed a day ago and I put a gas treatment in the car. I am not very car savvy at all but I am learning. All my antifreeze leaked out my car so I did use liquid copper to help the leak. Not sure what is wrong with it.

Hello,

Can you shoot a quick video of what the engine is going when you try and start it? If you dont hear the fuel pump and don't have any spark at the plugs I would say it can be the crankshaft angle sensor which when they go out they will not set a code for the problem.

This guide will give you some possibilities to get us started.

Please run some tests and get back to us.

Cheers, Ken

Sorry it took me so long to reply I went outside to try and see if it was the fuel pump and I decided to try and start it for fun and it actually started I have no idea why it didn't start before. Now it drives fine but is now leaking antifreeze it won't hold antifreeze for long maybe a day and a half. I can't tell where it's leaking from but when the car was running hot I heard a loud hissing noise.

When I drive for a period of time and turn the engine off mainly in hotter weather the engine turns over but will not start. I have to wait 20 minutes before I can start the car again, it always starts back up.

When this happens, have you ever checked to see if it is missing spark and fuel to the engine? One or both will be missing and I need to know which one.

Let me know.

03' ford explorer 4.0 sohc flex no start just cranks. Checked fuel pressure 65-70 psi at rail, has spark, has 150- 135 psi compression at all cylinders. Tore apart to cams, all chains and guides tight and present no deflection. Bought cam alignment tools and set to top dead center, all line up w/ tools. I've tried to pcm, crank sensor, coil pack. It died on road and has never re-started. Checked for codes has none. I have a snap-on modis and pid monitored this and everything looks good. I've got it to try to fire at times at wide open throttle it catches and shuts off just as fast. Dose anybody have any ideals, something i'm not thinking of? I was a Ford tech for 8 yrs.

Yes I know what you mean. It seems to be defying all the laws of mechs has everything it needs but will not run. Some times when I have this prob I take 6 spark plugs lay them on the eng and crank and watch to be sure all plugs are fireing. I also do the same thing with the injectors to be sure all six are spraying. You can also get a can of f/i cleaner that connects to fuel rail disable primary fuel system see if it runs on the cleaner to eliminate bad gas.I know I am running down the same trail you have been but 2 minds are better theb one so let me know if any of this helps meanwhile I will research. Thanks billymac, I haven't layed out all plugs to see if they all fire but I did replace them all, I wondered about bad gas so I disconnected the main fuel line and pumped it into a jug then dump it on the ground and lit it up. Appeared to be good gas. When I took the valve covers off I did pull the fuel rails w/ injectors and cranked it to see them spray. All appeared good. This truck is possessed, it seems anytime my cars break or somebody I know its always some off the wall problem.

I changed my spark plugs and wires. I disconnected my battery and reconnected it and now my truck wont start. Do you think it has something to do with resetting the computer?

Hi, I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0. Ever since recently the truck has been giving me a problem when starting up on cold days. After sitting over night, or sometimes after a temperature drop the truck will crank but not start. When it doesn't do that, it makes a loud humming noise and clicks, and then on the second try, it will start right up, I've recently taken it to ford and they said that the fuel pump was faulty, we've had the fuel pump, fuel filter, battery, and starter changed but the problem is still persisting. I don't know a lot about cars, but I'm hoping to find a solution to the problem, I appreciate all of the help in advance, thanks.

Check fuel pressure with a gauge should be 60-65 psikey on engine off it may be a connection like the oil pressure switch is bad or loose.
