I might suggest that you go back in and check to see that the plug is secure and that any other connections such as a ground are as they were.

Hi teleman9666,

Here are the description and diagnostic procedures.

DTC 51-XX, 52-XX, 53-XX, 54-XX, 55-XX, 57-XX, 58-XX ("X" CAN BE 0 THRU 9 OR A THRU F): INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE SRS UNIT
NOTE:

"Â Before troubleshooting any of these DTCs, check the battery/system voltage and battery cable connections. If the voltage is low, repair the charging system or replace the battery before troubleshooting the SRS. If the battery/system voltage is now OK, ask the customer if the battery ever went dead or if the engine was started and run with the battery in a low state of charge. A dead battery may trigger one or more of these DTCs.

"Â 2-door Before replacing the SRS unit, check the SRS unit software version with the HDS. If the software version is not the latest, update the SRS unit software and retest.
"Â Clear the DTC memory.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.

3. Check that the SRS indicator goes off.

4. Does the SRS indicator goes off?

YES - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to TROUBLESHOOTING INTERMITTENT FAILURES. If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.

NO - Replace the SRS unit.

Why is the airbag light for this car on. It just came on a few months after my dad bought it. Also sometimes it won't start. If you try several times eventually it will start. He paid cash for this car from a car dealer so there is no warranty with it and he is 69 years old so he doesn't need to be out there working on it. Please help!

The not starting sounds related to fuel pump or pressure loss in the system. Have the fuel system pressure tested.

SRS could be a blown fuse, but I would ensure that it is in working order.

Why shouldn't I change this myself? So long as I disconnect the battery before beginning any of the work it should be OK. Right?

It means there is a issue with your air bag system your first step would be to get the air bag computer scanned for codes. Please post the exact code numbers not code descriptions.

You have to fix the problem before reseting a air bag light or the light will never go out. The starting point is see what codes you have otherwise your just taking wild guesses.

Hi arturo torres,

Get a scan done first to see what is causing the problem. It clould be a simple fix as a bad seat belt receptor.

Otherwise it is best left to professionals, this being a safety item.
