Radiator Fan Control Relay?

Engine Cooling problem 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 940000 miles

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I need to replace the fan control relay. My problem is that I can not find mine, it is not where the chilton book says it is.
It is not located under the passenger head light, I have the entire front end apart and there is no relay located there. There are holes in the sheet metal where it should be, but it is not there. Is there another hiding place for this relay?

Notice the radiator fan relay control just above the low and high speed fan relays, my fan runs on high from engine start thus not allowing engine to come up to operating temperature. And my MIL is on indicating P01489 and P01490, both of which are talking of this PWM relay. I am sorry for the long question but I have a new control relay that was purchased using my 4.0L engine size.

If its a 4.0L engine its located in the power distribution box-see below 2-fan speed relay involved.

Here is the wiring diagram and relay location (below) along with some easy guides to help you with the testing.

and

and in case the motor is bad which happens alot

Here is the fan control module (below)

It will show up on the cooling fan EWD as I've provided.

P1489. High Speed Fan Control Relay

P1490. Low Speed Fan Relay Circuit

Above these 2 relays is a hydraulic cooling fan module it is not a relay and only applies to 4.7L engine.

The coolant temperature sensor feeds the computer the engine temperature. The computer decides whether only one fan is needed or 2 fans depending on engine temperature and AC load-Have your computer tested its jobs is to energize the appropriate relay as needed.

Hi for the person that was looking to find the radiator fan control rely, you have to remove the front bumper cover to find it. And it is located under the passenger headlight after you remove the bumper cover. I had the same issue trying to find it.

Under passenger side head light mounting panel. Both headlights must be removed along with the hood latch and mounting bracket to gain access to relay. Grand Cherokee

Hello,

I take it since your mechanic cannot find the relay it is a Grand Cherokee not a Cherokee. The relay is located Behind Bumper Facia, Below Right Headlight...

The relay on a Cherokee is located in the Power Distribution Box under the hood

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl 85M miles. The car overheated the other day and threw a P1491 code causing the Check Engine light to come on. I was in heavy stop & go traffic. After letting the car cool down for 45 mins I proceeded to destination and the temp stayed normal, 210 degrees. I checked all cooling systems and all seems to work. The electric fan comes on when the AC is switched on and or when the engine reaches temp. The electric fan doesn't turn as agressively as I have experienced in other cars though. Normally they torque right up to speed, this one slowly gets there but doesn't move the air I thought it would. The fan blade moves freely with no binding so it's not seized up any. Could the fan be bad or maybe the relay can't handle the currrent the fan wants to draw> Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Richard

I think your vehicle has two relays one for slow fan speed and one for high speed. It also could be a clogged radiator. If you haven't changed the coolant from the factory, that is the problem as the OEM coolant dies after about 40K miles and turns to juck in the radiator.

I didn't realize there were two speeds to the fan. I unplugged the fan and ran a full 13 volts to it and it ran the same as it did when plugged in. I just wasn't happy with the fan speed and the amount of air it moved.
Thanks

Your probable causes here could be the fan motor itself, fan relay, coolant temperature sensor or the engine temperature gauge switch and computer controlled of the fan relay-

Hello,

Here is the cooling fan wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works. There is no switch that runs it just the PCM and a relay with a fuse. Here is the relay location and a guide to test the relay and power.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-test-light-circuit-tester

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

Cheers
