Wow, that is an interesting one. What I want you to do so we have an idea which way to go is this. You need to pull diagnostic trouble codes. This is an OBD1 system and doesn't require any type of a scanner. Codes are retrieved via the ignition switch. Follow this link.

No, since there is a loss of power as you described but the problem goes away in reverse, it almost sounds like the catalytic converter could be disconnected internally and the insides moving around. If the air flow is blocked, it will act the way you described. In reverse, you may be causing the insides to move a different direction. It's a long shot at this point, but a thought. Do me a favor. Take a rubber mallet and tap on the exhaust to see if you hear any noise from the converter.
Do these two things and let me know what you find. Also, confirm that the 30psi fuel pressure is with the engine running.
