I have a '91 Honda Accord EX; 137,000 miles; almost definately a 2.2 engine (small possibility it is a 2.0. Not sure. Sorry)
Once, about a year ago, the "sport" transmission light suddenly came on (while driving) & the tran would ONLY run in 2nd & 3rd. However, shortly after, it returned to normal on it's own. Since then, a couple times, I would start the car & the "sport" light would engage immediately. It would pull out (from park) in 2nd & switch to 3rd, but would not go to 4th. Shortly afterward, tho, it would return to normal (on it's own).
About a month ago, the "sport" light came on while I was driving (not upon start up, but still only accessing 2nd & 3rd), & would not switch off. I took it for a transmission flush. When I called a day later to see if it was finished, the shop told me, "We did not do a flush. We've seen this problem before and it was actually a "shift cellanoid". They said the car needed to be put on a diagnostic machine (which they did not have) & recommended me to a man.
Because I appriciated the fact that they had saved me almost $100 by not doing a flush that they didn't think was neccessary, I took it to the man they had recommended. The garage was at his home, but there were MANY cars there (in his driveway) & he had a 4 or 5 car garage. No sign or name of his "business" posted anywhere. It seemed legitimate, tho, because the garage was OBVIOUSLY larger than one that would've been built with the house. Anyway, he tells me that "a cellanoid goes bad because of a problem in/with the transmission".
From that point on, my best friend's father handled everything. He contacted a junk yard and set up a purchase of a transmission. He then told the mechanic about it. I am assuming that he did not physically buy & pick up the trans & deliver it to the mechanic (just because he paid the bill entirely to mechanic. $950.00).
He picked the car up about a week ago, & drove it less than 10 miles home. It SAT until 7 days later, when it was driven 2 miles to be inspected. It passed, and was driven 2 miles home. I drove it 25 miles (exactly) to a particular store, parked for 5 minutes, and then drove 25 miles home. Less than 30 minutes later, I tried to leave again. As I started it up, the "sport" light came on AGAIN, along with the same problem (only running in 2nd & 3rd. Won't shift to 1st or 4th).
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? I am not a reckless driver and drove 30-40 mph almost the entire trip, except for 5 minutes which I drove 55mph. Again, the tran was FINE the whole trip (about 1.5 hours) and didn't have a problem until I started it again a half hour after that.
Do think this guy just ripped me off? (Actually my friend's dad paid him and I am to make him monthly payments). Do you think he actually did ANYTHING? Or maybe replaced the transmission unneccessisarily? I don't know what to do. I can't afford for anything else to be done with the car. I still owe my best friend's dad almost $1000 for this.
Please help me. I am desperate.
