The D4 light is flashing on the dashboard and the transmission is sluggish in shifting. Is there anything I can do short of replacing the transmission? I am a senior living on not much money.

My mechanic says he can keep the car going at least until 300,000. The engine is running fine. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Hi communikay,

Get the trouble codes retrieved and we can proceed from there. The transmission of this era seldom fails when an indicator is showing. The most likely fault would be a faulty sensor or Transmission control Module.

Bridge the SCS connector and count the blinking of the D4 light to get the trouble code.

Thanks for your reply. Took my 93 honda accord ex to the mechanic and he changed the speed sensor. Didn't work so he changed it once again. Still no dice. He wants me to take it to the Honda dealer and have it put on the computer. Is this reasonable? Thanks

Did the mechanic tried to retrieve for trouble codes before attemptng to perform repairs?

I had already posted the process for retrieving the trouble codes.

He does not seem to be competent in the process and I would suggest getting a secoond opinion if you do not wish to go to the dealer.

If it pulls off slowly when you start off, then put your gear shift on 1--> the lowest one on the bottom of your gearbox. If it's not the same, pulls off faster, then it's your transmission. And then put it on 2 and see if its the same.

Is the the D4 ( or S ) light blinking when driving?

Is the speedometer working correctly?

Does the gears upshift accordingly?

Hi tamidicus,

You can only use if from a Honda or other makes that incorporates the same trans.

Some Rover vehicles uses the same trans but the trans code should be the same for it to work.

I have a '91 Honda Accord EX; 137,000 miles; almost definately a 2.2 engine (small possibility it is a 2.0. Not sure. Sorry)

Once, about a year ago, the "sport" transmission light suddenly came on (while driving) & the tran would ONLY run in 2nd & 3rd. However, shortly after, it returned to normal on it's own. Since then, a couple times, I would start the car & the "sport" light would engage immediately. It would pull out (from park) in 2nd & switch to 3rd, but would not go to 4th. Shortly afterward, tho, it would return to normal (on it's own).

About a month ago, the "sport" light came on while I was driving (not upon start up, but still only accessing 2nd & 3rd), & would not switch off. I took it for a transmission flush. When I called a day later to see if it was finished, the shop told me, "We did not do a flush. We've seen this problem before and it was actually a "shift cellanoid". They said the car needed to be put on a diagnostic machine (which they did not have) & recommended me to a man.

Because I appriciated the fact that they had saved me almost $100 by not doing a flush that they didn't think was neccessary, I took it to the man they had recommended. The garage was at his home, but there were MANY cars there (in his driveway) & he had a 4 or 5 car garage. No sign or name of his "business" posted anywhere. It seemed legitimate, tho, because the garage was OBVIOUSLY larger than one that would've been built with the house. Anyway, he tells me that "a cellanoid goes bad because of a problem in/with the transmission".

From that point on, my best friend's father handled everything. He contacted a junk yard and set up a purchase of a transmission. He then told the mechanic about it. I am assuming that he did not physically buy & pick up the trans & deliver it to the mechanic (just because he paid the bill entirely to mechanic. $950.00).

He picked the car up about a week ago, & drove it less than 10 miles home. It SAT until 7 days later, when it was driven 2 miles to be inspected. It passed, and was driven 2 miles home. I drove it 25 miles (exactly) to a particular store, parked for 5 minutes, and then drove 25 miles home. Less than 30 minutes later, I tried to leave again. As I started it up, the "sport" light came on AGAIN, along with the same problem (only running in 2nd & 3rd. Won't shift to 1st or 4th).

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? I am not a reckless driver and drove 30-40 mph almost the entire trip, except for 5 minutes which I drove 55mph. Again, the tran was FINE the whole trip (about 1.5 hours) and didn't have a problem until I started it again a half hour after that.

Do think this guy just ripped me off? (Actually my friend's dad paid him and I am to make him monthly payments). Do you think he actually did ANYTHING? Or maybe replaced the transmission unneccessisarily? I don't know what to do. I can't afford for anything else to be done with the car. I still owe my best friend's dad almost $1000 for this.

Please help me. I am desperate.
Ariana

I love the name. My daughter has the same name.

I bet you have been thinking that they didn't even replace the tranny and just charged you. That is possible, but I doubt it. There are a number of other inputs to the transmission. The ATCU (automatic transmission control unit) itself could be bad and the email I am sending to you has more information.
