1998 Camaro, 85000 miles, 3800 V-6 - When I cold start the car, there is a pretty loud clicking sound from the engine. Kinda like it is low on oil. However, oil level is fine (recently changed). Oil pressure is always good. After a couple of minutes, the noise stops and the car runs great. :?:

You have a temperamental hydraulic valve lifter. Go to the parts store and buy a pint of Rislone. It is an old line mechanics helper, like me the old mechanic.

It will dissipate in the engine and you don't have to remove any oil. I would suggest a fresh oil change with it.

Suggested Repair

Treat a sticky hydraulic valve lifter by adding a pint of Rislone during a fresh oil change. It can be added without draining oil, but a fresh oil change is recommended.

Conversation Summary

A 1998 Camaro with a 3800 V6 ticks loudly on cold start, similar to low oil, then quiets after a couple of minutes and runs well. Oil level and pressure are good. The expert attributes the noise to a temperamental hydraulic valve lifter and recommends adding Rislone, preferably with a fresh oil change.
