Engine Mechanical problem
2001 GMC Jimmy 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

i was driving my jimmy a couple nights ago and it just quit running. I towed it home. I replaced the fuel filter. It will start and stay running if you spray starter fluid in it and you can shut it off and it will start back up, but if you leave it sit and try to start it the next morning it wont start. I hooked up a fuel pressure tester to it and it has 30 psi when the pump primes the lines and 55-60 psi when its running after you use starting fluid to get it to start. I have been told it could be the pump but it costs 300dollars and I cant spend that much without knowing thats the problem. I have hooked up a code reader and no codes come up. Im stumped please help

Sure sounds like a fuel pump to me. You should be getting at least twice that much pressure once the pump has pressured up. What you're seeing when it's running is more like it, but still a little bit low.

What happens when you have that 30 lbs of pressure & you turn the key off? It should hold pressure. If it drops back to zero, that's another indication of a faulty fuel pump.

When I have 30 lbs and I shut the key off it holds pressure fine. I left the gauge on there for about 5 hrs and it still had pressure. Plus when I had it running I used the release on the gauge to relieve pressure while it was running and it only dropped to 20 psi. Thats why im not sure if its the pump.
