I've had a few days to research, and I found the repair manual for my model. I've had a look through it and I've found a diagnostic section for CEL codes. My one is code 14 and I'm working through each step. I'm just wondering, if the car is throwing a CEL, does it necessarily need to be that specific issue, or can it be a symptom of something else. For example, could it say it has an ignition circuit problem and it turns out it's a bad sensor. Just need to know before I start ruling out possibilities. Thanks

Hi,

For that code to be set, there is a problem within the ignition system. It could be a sensor, but the sensor in some way contributes to the circuit.

Does that make sense? LOL

Let me know.

Okay. I've managed to check some things in the ignition circuit and here's what I've found:
1. Good spark when cranking.
2. Good continuity in igf wire from ECM to igniter.
3. IGF signal is 4.6V at ECM and igniter.
5. 12V power to igniter.
9. Good continuity in igt wire from ECM to igniter.
Not sure if this points towards a concrete problem, or if there are still things to test.

Based on your findings the igniter is bad and needs to be replaced5. Take a look at pic 1 below and let me know your thoughts.

I will watch for your reply.

Take care,

Joe

Hey, did you end up solving your issue? I know it’s a shot in the dark but I am having the exact same issue with my 6th gen and this is the only thread where the problem has looked identical. I’ve tried multiple igniters, a new distributor/coil, and I’ve checked for continuity between the IGF wire between the igniter and ECU, but I still have the same problem as OP, it cranks, starts and immediately stalls, then will simply crank and no start unless I turn the key off and try again. Code 14. Thanks!

Hi,

Unfortunately, the person never let us know the outcome. Is your vehicle the same year, make, and model as the original post?

Let me know. Also, let me know if code 14 is the only one you get.

Take care,

Joe

Hi, it has been a while. I had it at the mechanics for the past couple of months. Turns out it was a blown capacitor in the ecu causing problems. Sent the ECU over for repairs and now she runs like new. Thanks for all the help that I got along the way, its feels so good to finally have it running again.

Hi Joe, I have a very similar problem as Silver Celica, where my car stars cold and once it warms up it stalls out, then it cranks but no start. It is a 1996 Celica St204 5s-fe, and I've found once it is warm there is no spark at the plugs, and I must wait a couple hours for it to cool down and start it again. It also gives a code 12, (no N E signal to ECM after 2 sec. Cranking). Is this the crank position sensor? I have looked around a lot and heard from various people that the 1996 does/doesn't have a crank angle sensor, and I am pretty lost at this point as I don't want to pull things apart I don't have to. I also noticed lots of the pictures and manuals you provided were very useful, where are they from? I have an old bgb book pdf but it is missing sections. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Based on your description, it is the crankshaft position sensor. When they begin to fail, often heat adversely affects them causing a loss of spark. Once cooled, they begin working again.

Do me a favor. Take a look through this link and let me know if anything mirrors what you experience.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe
