Hi,

Could you record it cranking and upload it for me to hear?

Hi,

No, I found it back on page 1. Are you sure the compression is good? It is really cranking fast.

Let me know.

I'll double check the compression.

It didn't start cranking like that until after I changed out the starter.

Is a gauge absolutely necessary? Do I need to know the exact PSI or am I just making sure there's compression?

Hi,

A gauge would help. Compression can be low enough to prevent it from starting, but enough to blow your thumb off the spark plug hole.

If you don't have one, oftentimes a parts store will lend one to you.

Let me know.

Ah, that makes sense. Will touch base when I'm able to do the test. Thanks again for all your help.

So, yeah, compression is s***. 100psi max, average was less than 90. Great times.

Okay. That is a little lower than what we want. But, I want you to do a wet compression test. Before installing the gauge, add about 1 tablespoon of motor oil to the cylinder and then recheck the compression. See if it increases.

Let me know.

Okay, so I feel like I should start a new thread. Lol
After re-reading the testing instructions, I retested the compression, and the results are as follows.

#1=160psi #2=140psi
#3=160psi #4=110psi (120 after adding oil to cylinder)
#5=150psi #6=160psi
#7=150psi #8=150psi

Hi,

Are those the readings after adding the oil? If so, I suspect the compression rings are worn. Did you try starting it after this test when the compression was higher?

Let me know.

Well, the first round of testing was the result of me forgetting the instructions say to crank for 10 seconds. Shame on me. The only cylinder I added oil to was #4.

No new efforts to start the pickup.

Hello joe, it has been some time. I don't like to pop in out of the blue like this, but I have been meaning to ask this for a while. Since I am now running a mechanical fuel pump, do I need to adjust the fuel intake? If I let her run for a min, I can smell the gas is pretty strong and if I put her in gear and try to move, she gets very sluggish. I appreciate your time. Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg,

No problem whatsoever. I'm glad you're back. I need you to help me remember everything. LOL We have a mechanical pump with fuel injection?

If anything, I would think that would lower pressure. However, based on what you described; it sounds like the pressure is too high. Do you have fuel injection or a carb on this?

Again, sorry. I went back through the posts and just don't remember how it was resolved. I see indications of both. LOL If you have a carb, you may have a needle and seat that are leaking or the float itself may need set.

Let me know.

Sorry for any confusion, I probably should have started a new post.
I don't know why I said mechanical. We removed the mechanical and put an inline electric fuel pump in because the mechanical wouldn't pump any fuel. She is carbureted and we got her started by rotating the distributor 180 degrees.

Hi,

Now I remember. LOL No need to start a new post. This is all related. As far as the issue, it sounds like the pump is producing more pressure than the needle and seat can stop from entering the carb. Do you know what the pump was designed to produce? These carbs are designed to work with low pressure. It would be somewhere between 5 and 10 PSI.

Good morning Joe,

I believe it's 3-6 PSI. Do you think if I were to relocate it closer to the engine instead of the gas tank it would make any difference?

Hi,

It really won't matter where the pump is located. Have you checked to see how much pressure the pump is producing?

Merry Friday Joe,

Okay, I didn't think it would, just thought I'd ask. I don't know what the actual pressure is, but I double checked the rating of 3-6 PSI.
