Based on your description, sounds like the problem is fuel related. Check for a clogged fuel filter, or no fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Your '96 Windstar may have a schrader valve at the fuel rail to hook up a fuel pressure tester. You don't really need the tester initially to see if you have fuel pressure. The valve looks just like a tire valve. Turn on the ignition and press the little valve at the same time (sheild your eyes - - be careful for fuel spray.) If no pressure or if the fuel just dribbles out, pump is likely bad. Keep in mind though, fuel pump runs for only 2 seconds, then stops, if engine is not turning. Press in the valve and have an assistant turn ignition key - but do not crank engine. Only turn it to "on" so he/she sees all the dash lights illuminate.
Try the fuel pressure test. If no go, then reply with other details and I might be able to assist further.
If battery is dying, this could cause hard starting, but not necessarily stalling.
