I would like to know if one thing has to do with the other. Went to change the thermostat because car didn't have heat. They changed the thermostat and I have heat but now the car is shaking and the engine light went on and they checked and said it was the head gasket

What's the trouble code(s)?

What maybe happened (it is pure supposition on my part though) is that when they replaced the thermostat, some air got trapped behind it which prevented it from opening. As a result your engine overheated and the headgasket blew.
Now it could be completely unrelated as well. There's no way to know for sure.

If you come back with the code(s) it would help to understand what's going on with your car.

You can go to autozone, o'reilly, advanced auto, etc

Usually they can retrieve the codes from your car for free.

If you do have a blown head gasket, it could cost you up to $1500 to have it fixed, depending on your engine.
So it is up to you to decide if it is worth fixing it.
If you do decide to have it fixed, make sure you go to a reputable shop; if a head gasket job is not done properly, the new gasket will fail prematurely.

Hope this help
