recently started surging and stalling then yesterday it died and would not start

There are a number of things this could be. You should probably start by checking the fuel filter and carb. You could also have to check fuel injectors. After this, check to see if you can hear the fuel pump engaaging when you turn the key on. You should hear it engage for a few seconds when you turn the key to the on position.
