I have a 92 Ford Explorer. I recently thought I had a leak from the water pump. I changed the pump to find that the leak was not the pump but coming from something else. The hoses seem fine but it is still leaking somewhere. I can see the coolant drip down but can't pinpoint where it is coming from. It also makes a hissing sound when hot. Could this be the engine. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Coolant will normally leave a white stain when dried. The hiss is quite possibly the leak. Look for stains above the waterpump. Usually the highest piont will be the leak.

Good hunting. :)

Suggested Repair

With the engine hot, trace the hiss and look for white dried coolant stains, especially above the water pump. The highest stained point is usually the leak source.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1992 Ford Explorer replaced the water pump after suspecting it caused a coolant leak, but coolant still drips from an unidentified point and the engine hisses when hot. The hoses appear fine. The expert said dried coolant normally leaves white stains, the hiss is likely the leak, and the highest stain above the water pump is usually the source.
