1994 Ford Explorer XLT Starting Problems

Hi, my SUV sometimes has trouble starting, and now running. Last fall during a warm day ran an errand and came out and couldn't start the truck until after about 45 minutes of waiting. Recently, it regularly starts right up but immediately turns off. I then start it up again and it runs fine. This weekend I was heading home and as I turned onto my street the truck died and I had to coast into my driveway. I let it sit for 10 minutes and luckily was able to back it out onto the street where it will sit until I determine if it's the fuel filter or worse. :cry:

I have ~133,000 miles, it's a 5-speed, and the fuel filter was last replaced at 118k in July 2002 when I had the 120K service done.

are there any light coming on check eng light , knwoing the codes if any would help, if you can get them checked nad get back to us im sure we can help

Jim - thanks for the quick reply; I appreciate what you do.

There have been no check engine lights coming on, or of it flashing. Is there a way for me to get the codes without a special tool or taking it in to a repair shop?

autozone doe it for free but it wont move , my theory on diagnosis is check the bateery , check fuel pressure and fire , all the basics first , fire you can check on your own , fuel pressure you would need a gage which can be picked up cheaply at harbor frieght or any parts store , get back to me and let me know what you want to do and we will go from there

Thanks. I'll check out the basics next week and see if I can find an autozone nearby, and take a risk venturing out...it's generally very reliable, but a bit quirky. Battery is probably due for a change, but I'll check first. I'll post Saturday/Sunday. Thanks again.

just remember start simple with all of the basics and dont replace anything unless you know its bad

I had the same type of problems with my 93 explorer. The engine would die, and after a short time, I could get it to run again.
My problem turned out to be a faulty relay. It was the electronic engine controls relay (EEC). It is a relay in the power distribution center under the hood. There is a box with relays and fuses. I think all the relays are the same. Try switching the blower relay with the EEC relay and see if that is the problem.
I have had to replace 2 of these relays in my Explorer.
If it is the relay, they are readily available at your local auto parts store for about $5.
