I changed the rod bearings and now it over heats and smokes from the tail pipe any idea what it could be?

Did you remove the engine or do it in the vehicle? Also, did you remove the timing belt for any reason? Finally, if no work was done to the crank, did you replace the bearings with standard size ones or oversized?

Used standard size bearings yes timing belt was taken out and reused. Did have to replace rod since that is why I had to take it apart in the first place

My only guess at this point is the timing may be off one tooth.
