the past few weeks have had to add coolant but there is never any on ground now the gauge goes over to the H mark even after added fluid

Possible failed head gasket. When engine is cool, remove radiator cap then get in vehicle (make sure noone is around radiator) and start engine. If coolant shoots up out of radiator cap opening then you have failed head gasket and/or cracked head.
