Have replaced the water pump, radiator, and thermastat. The cooling system appears to be in working order. The car can idle for half an hour and not get hot however begins to get hot immediately when in gear. What am I overlooking?

Was it doing the same thing before you replaced the thermostat? It sounds like it is partially shut and not allowing enough flow. Also, has the timing belt ever been replaced?
