2005 Ford Contour charging system

I boosted my ford contour from another vehicle connecting both terminals on each battery with booster cables as normal I started the contour and noticed elictrical smoke from drivers side of the engine below or around the battery and mainfuse box under the hood now my charging system light stays on and no charging to the battery is occuring what fuse did I blow?

Check the big fuses
check all fuses
and check for battery power at the rear of alternator
if you have power then alternator no good replace it
Sounds like you melted the MAIN fuse, in that under hood panel, use a voltmeter or test light to find the blown one, it's usually right on the front of that box, between the two leads.
