My van has shown these symptons to 2 recent long trips. First it starts cuting out and stalling and at about the same time the transmision will start going into and out of lock up and downshifting at highway speeds when it should not. After sitting awhile the symtpoms will go away but when you drive distance it returns. Any ideas?

Yes, I have an idea that a sensor may have an intermittant problem, and is causing a sort of confusion between the engine and transmission controllers. Both can be checked with a good scanner. See the section about how this works. Both the PCM and TCM stores fault codes and can help you determine where to look. I think that is best. Could be one or two circuit problems. Have both computers scanned for fault codes. If you have trouble do not hesitate to ask for help or advice.
Ok You may be losing a crankshaft sensor signal, causing problems but it could be something else.
