Hi Hayderaz,

I attached an exploded view of the engine block and it shows the crank sensor location. I circled it in red just in case.

Please let me know if you need anything else. Thanks

Thank you for your help but I did not find it. Do you mean I need to open the engine?

No. That was the only view that they gave in the shop manual to show where it is located. However, I didn't think to look at the replacement procedure. Here is a different view. Looks like it is behind the exhaust pipe on the side of the engine block.

Hello guy's I'm in need of some assistance. Have the car listed above don't know exactly the location of the crankshaft position sensor and don't know if there's more than one. And information on how to change the sensor and procedures if need to program or if there any re-calibration necessary. Thanks in advance!

I attached the info for the CKP sensor. There is only one so you just need to access it by removing part of the exhaust. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks

Thanks for the info. Looking at the diagram of the whole motor it's correct. Only the top end of mind the air intake is opposite from the image. The only way I see myself accessing it would be take the driver wheel off and reaching. I'm not to sure if that would be a good approach?

Sorry for the delay. Yes. That is very common to have to remove one of the wheels to access it on engines with transaxles.

Car would stall every now and then, but start back up. Online diagnosis either mass air flow sensor or crank sensor. Bought both; first mass sensor was wrong one even when given the VIN. Got the right in and it started acting up more. Went to change crank sensor but the sensor I took out according to them comes back as speed sensor. If you search the part number online first says it is crank sensor for 3.4 engine. So I looked online to change crank sensor again but only see the one that they say is speed sensor. They are AutoZone and the part number in question is 10456568 m (ie Crank Sensor). I need to maybe see a diagram or picture so I can find crank sensor, to change it out. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

The GM part number for the crank sensor on that engine is GM# 12598208 it is the one in the image. The part number you have (10456568) is the transmission output speed sensor. The crank position sensor is on the firewall side of the engine, just above the oil pan lip and in line with the exhaust outlet on the manifold. To get to it you go under the car, then unplug the sensor, remove it and reverse the process to install the new one. They have a habit of sticking in the block so you may want to remove it with a warm engine and gently work it out of the bore.
Once replaced you need to use a scan tool to do a CKP relearn procedure so the ECM knows the signal levels of the new sensor.

Good evening.

The crank sensor is behind the right exhaust manifold. The manifold needs to be removed to gain access to the sensor.

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Remove the right exhaust manifold.
2. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector (1).

Important: Clean the area around the CKP before removal in order to avoid debris from entering the engine.

3. Remove the CKP sensor bolt.
4. Remove the CKP sensor.

Right manifold

1. Remove the engine sight shield.
2. Remove the spark plugs.
3. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe nuts from the right exhaust manifold.
4. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.
5. Support the catalytic convertor and exhaust system with the mechanics wire.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the ignition coil.
8. Remove the O2 sensors.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Hello, thanks for using 2CarPros. here is a diagram locating the crank position sensor. It is located under the exhaust manifold about half way back on the engine block.

My car has a bad Crankshaft position sensor. It's a 2005 chevy impala, 3.4 and I know there are two possible places where it could be. Can you tell me the exact place they would be located?
