So I recently had put a new distributor cap and rotor on my Chevrolet crew cab dually 454 and then it fired right up but the distributor was making a knocking noise. I drove it for ten minutes then it stalled and hasn't started again since now. It will not start. I am not sure what to do. It is a spark issue tho so I might buy plugs and wires. Anyways just wondering what to do.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

If you heard a noise from the distributor after installing a cap, have you removed the cap to check for damage? Plugs and wires are an unlikely cause. It sounds like the rotor may have been damaged or other internal component. Maybe the rotor wasn't fully seated. Also, I have attached two pictures. Confirm wiring to the module wasn't damaged and make sure none of the underlined components in picture 2 have not come loose or been damaged.

Since you heard noise from there, something has happened within the distributor. When checking the things I suggested, make sure there isn't any up or down or lateral play in the distributor shaft.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Hi, I pulled the cap and rotor and it wasn't damaged just a few scratches. I took the rotor off put it back on still nothing. But when u pull up or down on the rotor it moves a cm or 2. And does turn side to side. Also what do you mean by rotor fully seated?

Could something be wrong with my coil? Because I hooked up the battery wrong about two months ago.

Welcome back:

As far as the rotor being seated, I have seen repairs where the rotor wasn't fully on the distributor shaft. As far s the coil, I would think it would have been noticed after it happened. Before you do anything else, remove the distributor cap and have a helper crank the engine to confirm the rotor is turning.

Listen, I dug up testing equipment from GM that explains how to check every component in the ignition system. It has both external coil and internal coil tests. Take a look through them and let me know if it helps. All the attached pictures are the actual steps.

This section presents a systematic method of diagnosing and troubleshooting the High Energy Ignition system. The charts you will be using are different from the ones you have used before. They aren't "go - no go" decision trees or tables. Instead the new diagnosis and troubleshooting charts use pictures plus a few words to help you solve a problem, and symbols have replaced words.

Using the Charts

The charts are divided into three sections: step, sequence and result.

pic 2

A sequence could be checking the battery lead terminal on the distributor. Each sequence ends with a result and tells you the next step to go to. Work through each step of the diagnosis and trouble-shooting charts until the system is repaired.

To find where parts are located in the system just look at the parts locator chart:

Welcome back:

Yes, start with the coil and work through the procedures until you find the problem. Also, make sure the rotor turns when the engine is being cranked.
