My Chevy S-10 will not start. I recently changed the starter and it started 5 or 6 times. I had the battery checked and it was OK. I noticed the ground wire from the battery attached to the firewall smoked, so replaced the wire, same result. Noise occurs as if the vehicle wants to kick over, but it will not. The headlights come on sometimes and other times not. Could this be alternator, or the replaced starter. Can someone please advise.

It sounds as though the ground wire from the battery to your engine may be at fault as if it is working correctly the ground at the firewall should not have smoked.
Check the wire and undue, clean, and inspect both ends of this wire.
