You need to see if it is in time. To do that you need to bring the number one cylinder up on the compression stroke and then see if the crank lines up on the timing mark and if the rotor under the distributor cap points to number one wire. If a car has fuel and spark then it should run unless it is out of time or it is flooding. When you pull the plug was it wet with gas? If you don't know then you need to check that too.
