DTC Reading Problem (Diagnostic Trouble Code Reading)

Ref: 1994 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L, L4, VinCode 4, "J"Carline,MFI. 63,000 miles, for real.

Check Engine Light is on but, cannot retrieve codes.
Have Chilton Manual which instructs, at the Data Link Connector (12 connector), ground terminal A to terminal B(ground).
My underdash DLC has no letters on it but by referring to wiring diagram the Pink lead comes from the ECM. Have tried connecting it to ground and to an engnine ground without success.

Engine idles high rpm even when warm.

If i remember correctly A and B are the top left terminal,and the one to its right, use a jumper wire to connect the two together , then turn key on and start counting the flashes

No connector at B.
I found an image of the connector which has the following 12 pin order when faced from the front:



TOP ROW: F E D C B A
LOWER " : G H - - - M

My Cavalier have only four conductors at the following locations

F (Pink) A(Brown/Black)
G(Black/Wjote H(White/Black)

Tried connector each to a good round and still does not work. Tried Pink to the other and ground: nothing.
If any ideas, would be welcome.

According to my software, if there is no wire at terminal B then a hand-held scanner must be used to retrieve codes
