let me say if the alternator is making noises, then replace it. the noise you describe is the bearing in the pulley going bad. now about the lights dimming, make sure that the battery connestions are tight and free from corrosion. if so then make sure the battery voltage is at 12 volts. if so you'll need to make sure the vehicle is charging properly. in order to keep a battery charged, it needs to be around 14 to 14.5 volts while running. take the vehicle to advance auto and they'll check your battery and charging system for free. good luck :)

Suggested Repair

Replace the noisy alternator, as the pulley bearing is likely failing. Also confirm battery connections are tight and corrosion-free, battery voltage is about 12 volts, and charging voltage is about 14 to 14.5 volts while running. Have the battery and charging system tested.

Conversation Summary

A 1997 Chevrolet Blazer has headlights and interior lights dimming and brightening. The owner already repaired a jumping belt tensioner; the alternator now makes a noise but tested good at a parts store. The expert says a noisy alternator should be replaced because the pulley bearing is failing, and recommends checking battery connections, resting battery voltage, and charging voltage, with a free charging-system test.
