Please understand, what you described can be the result of several things. The first thing to do is scan the computer. Based on what you said, the check engine light is most likely on all the time. Here is a video that shows how it is done:

Now, I realize most people don't own a scanner. If that is the case, take it to a parts store and have them scan the computer. Most nationally recognized parts stores will do it for free. Write down the codes that they find.
Once you can get me that information, I will be better able to help. With the present information, it could be related to the fuel system, an engine vacuum leak, a plugged catalytic converter due to the sound change, the ignition system.
I will watch for your reply. If you are unable to have the computer scanned, let me know and I will start walking you through one test at a time. If I give them all to you now, it will be overwhelming.
