Quit moving. Was driving it then it started acting like it wouldn't pull. Coasted into a parking lot and stopped. Now it won't move. Can move shifter (automatic) but it won't engage a gear (forward or reverse) so can't drive it. While sitting in the parking lot trying to get it in gear the motor seemed sluggish. Sorry, not sure how else to say it. Any ideas?

If when in gear, the engine accelerates(revs) like it is in park or neutral, it sounds like a transmission concern. Have you checked the transmission fluid, running in park? Verify that the level is full, and also take a sniff. If it smells burnt, and is off color(brown), it could indicate an internal problem.

My vehicle was making a jerking sound when I put the car in reverse gear in the morning and then later that day when I would put it in drive and then the next day it made a poping, loud noise and the vehicle would not drive any further.

I have taken it to a reconditioned transmission repair shop and the gentlemen said it was my gear box.

I have been trying to get an estimate from the gentleman but seems to be stalling and not returning calls when saying he will.

Could u give me an idea what may be wrong with my vehicle.

Hi there,

Auto transmissions are very complex items, you really have to dismantle the box first before you can give a quote, you may be better off asking for a price on a change over transmission fitted, this he should be able to quote with out a problem.

Have the suv scanned anyway, check for any "freeze frame data" could be a bad tranny as well. There is a tech bulliten for low line pressure, could be your problem.

Spark plugs for trans overheating?

There is a temp sensor in the trans that monitors temp of the fluid. If the cooler is clogged, it will cause this issue. The fact that it is slipping means there is damage to the clutches.

I have a 98 Mountaineer/automatic/AWD that will not engage the wheels when the shifter is engaged into forward or reverse gears. It gave me no warning i.E. Occasionally refusing to go in gear or grinding sounds, etc. It just quit moving without any warning. It makes grinding soulnds when I try to put the shifter back into Park position after attempting to shift into Forward or Reverse gears. I am thinking that it must be a problem inside the transfer case, since there is absolutely no movement of the vehicle in any gear position. Thanks in advance for any advice on what the problem might be.

IF you feel the transfer case is the problem, check to make sure the 4wd actuator is working properly. Remove it and check for operation.
