When I start the car in the am sometimes I have to rev the engine a little to get it to go into drive or reverse. Once I start driving I do not have any problems including if I turn the car off, go into a store and come back out.
It only happens in the morning when I start my day.

THere is a plug on the side of the trans that is used to check level and fill. The trans fluid should be full to the bottom of the bolt hole when removed.

Should I drain and refill or just check and top off if necessary?
I am very handy so is the filter something I should also do/check?

Thanx so much

It really matters how many miles you have since the last service. I recommend every 30K for a service.
