I ama VW certified tech. I just replaced a v6 cam tensioner on the drivers side (bank 2). This one required 16 rollers. Not sure if it has to do with auto or manual trans? This is a prime example of why I do not consider myself as an expert. If 15 rollers don't fix it, try 16. Sorry to unintentionally misleading anyone.

I thought the 4.2 V8 was the one that had the 15/16 split.

It should at least run rough with the cams slightly off. If no
hint of wanting to run. Then ignition or fuel.

I just know I had 1 that took 15 rollers even tho it said 16. Now I have 1 now I did exactly the same way and the exhaust cam valves too early. I am not getting misfires but the exhaust valves coz a patter in the tail pipe and runs rough. P1392 is the code. I used my experience coz its such a pain on this tensioner, I've ran across several short comings with vesis over the years.

It's weird. I used to own a 79 Mustang with the 2.3L inline four. When changing the timing belt, you had to advance the crank timing 2 teeth in order for it to want to run. Even if the belt was just being changed as a matter of maintenance. Same thing with my 99 1.9L Escort.

In 2000 I had a 1.8 passat come in with a bad cam tensioner. Vesis said 17 rollers. I had to r&r that head 3 times to find it took 16. I argued with the instructor at VW learning center over it. He swore vesis was correct. Several classes later he came clean and said it was incorrect and it had been corrected in vesis. Then I get a v6 calling for 16 rollers that actually took 15. Now I have another v6 that requires 16. All I can say is use the 16 and see, u may havta go 15. All I can say is good luck, and curious to know how many rollers it will take.

Got the Passat running, YAAA-WHOO. Thanks for all the help people. It took 16 rollers both sides, but driver side by sight, was 15 3/4. Did not look right but it worked. Passat is running like a VW again.
