My 96 Honda Accord's Speedometer has developed a problem displaying the correct speed while driving. Sometimes it seems to work, and other time it doesn't. When working, the needle correctly displays the driving speed (which I verified in speedometer check areas along the freeway -mile driven/time). When the speedometer isn't working the needle suddenly swings wildly around the panel. I have noticed that this occurs during hard acceleration, but it has occurred during normal driving starts and stops (such as accelerating gently from a traffic light). Recently the needle swung all the way around to the back side of the 0-mph stop and stayed for a time. Later the needle swung back round to start registering a normal speed. The bugginess of the needle also seems to occur at speed below 20 mph and above 70mph.
The odometer and trip meter still seems to be registering mileage properly. Shift points still seem to occur at the correct intervals and fuel consumption is at 23 mpg in city driving. Basically the car seems to be operating well, but the speedometer needle is acting crazy. Any Thoughts?
