I highly doubt the VSS as the tach would fail as well. You are most likely looking at replacing the speedometer. You can buy a cluster for that car from a used parts yard and then just put in the speedometer. You can buy new as well but I think they are pricey.

My 96 Honda Accord's Speedometer has developed a problem displaying the correct speed while driving. Sometimes it seems to work, and other time it doesn't. When working, the needle correctly displays the driving speed (which I verified in speedometer check areas along the freeway -mile driven/time). When the speedometer isn't working the needle suddenly swings wildly around the panel. I have noticed that this occurs during hard acceleration, but it has occurred during normal driving starts and stops (such as accelerating gently from a traffic light). Recently the needle swung all the way around to the back side of the 0-mph stop and stayed for a time. Later the needle swung back round to start registering a normal speed. The bugginess of the needle also seems to occur at speed below 20 mph and above 70mph.

The odometer and trip meter still seems to be registering mileage properly. Shift points still seem to occur at the correct intervals and fuel consumption is at 23 mpg in city driving. Basically the car seems to be operating well, but the speedometer needle is acting crazy. Any Thoughts?

Hi JPHonda,

Looks like you need to get the speed sensor replaced.

I don't think the mileage registered is correct.

Sounds like the VSS vehicle speed sensor possibly.I have had a few imports that have problems with the dash clusters there are several places on the internet that you can send clusters and have them rebuilt/fixed fairly cheap.

Should be pretty easy its on the tranaxle/transmission should be two small bolts. They are about 25 bucks online not sure in the store. Hope that's what it is be a cheap fix! Good luck.

Hi hondaboy305,

The speed sensor is bad and you need to replace it.

Located under the thermostat housing mounted on the trans assy.

While driving often my car will just stop automatically shifting leaving me to have to get off the road in 1st and 2nd gear only. When this happens, my speedometer stops working also. This happens periodically.

Hi Barbara,

Seems you have some problem with the TCM. Was the D4 light blinking when the trans acted up?

The speedometer stopped working before or after the trans decided not to shift?

Yes, the D4 light is still blinking. Not sure if the speedometer stopped right before or after. It seemed like it was about the same time. What is a TCM?

Barbara

Hi Barbara,

I would suggesst checking the speed sensor, it most probably requires replacement. A faulty speed sensor will cause the trans to shift abnormally.

TCM = transmission control module, ie, tran computer.

Thank you. I will have the speed sensor checked and let you know how my "Guam Bomb" does; hope that will fix the problem.
