Engine won't start and run?

Yes, fuel pumps will do that. Especially at that mileage. When it wont start check for fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Sometimes they will have a small amount of pressure, but not enough to run the engine, so going by sound (hearing the pump run) doesnt really help. There is a fuel pump inertia switch behind the right front kick panel, test for power in and out of that, it is the last stop for power before the pump, that will tell you if the circuit is working

Check to see if the engine is getting spark and fuel. One will most likely be missing. Once you identify which is missing, then focus on that system (ignition or fuel).

When it stalls, if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If you spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Next, use a noid lite and check for injector pulse. Intermittent issues can be a pain, you have to test when the problem is ongoing.

Hello I have a 1996 Ford Explorer with 166,899 miles. My engine cranks but will not start. After sitting for a couple of days it started. Now it won't start again but it still cranks. Tried to jump start, tried tapping starter and checked for loose plugs and hoses, engine still won't start but continues to crank.

What could be the problem?

Thanks

I have a 1994 with the same problem and I'm yet to figure it out. You want to determine whether it's a fuel or spark problem. I'm going to guess it's a spark problem. First check all your wires (including plug wires) and connectors. Then run electrical tests on your entire ignition system. Plugs, sensors and relays, coil pack, and ignition control module. That list started with the least expensive and went up. The ICM for my truck was 150 dollars.
Then do checks for your fuel system. Including fuel filter, fuel pump (and relay), fuel pressure regulator, etc.
I advise you get a Haynes manual from your local auto parts store. They guide you through the tests fairly well.
Good luck. I'm still searching for the problem with mine. I'll let you know as soon as I solve my problem.

My explorer starts great the first time in the day that
I start it. I run a couple of errends and when its all
warmed up it wont start till it sits for about an hour.
When warm and it does start it runs rough for 20= seconds and then kicks into a normal and good idle.
The truck runs great when its running and shows no problems. Was thinking of replacing oxygen sensor but not sure.
What do you think?

Well, if you want to throw away $60 then you can send it to me .

But on a more serious note, your problem is not related to the oxygen sensor. I need a bit more information to help you.

Does the engine crank normally when warm? Or does it crank slowly, as if the battery was low?

If it cranks normally, you could have a problem with the fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, ignition module, coil pack, or a sensor.

Is the "check engine" light on?

Post back with more information, and I can help you further with the diagnosis.

Any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand autostores used to check codes for free. You could try an obd 2 code reader?

When the problem occurs, don't disconnect the battery. Have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Check for injector pulse.

It sounds like disconnecting the battery causes something to reset? At the moment, I don't know why?
