Starting Problem

My boyfriend owns a 1991 Ford Escort. He has in the past few months replaced both the battery and starter. He has recently found it difficult to get it to start. He sometimes has to put it into neutral. He doesn't know if its the ECU or the Ignition Switch or maybe just the spark plugs. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

What is it doing? Cranking over and will not start or just won't crank over at all/nothing when key is turn to starting position

It was actually just a bad terminal connection (hopefully) lol. He replaced it this afternoon and so far so good.
