Check the pickup coil inside the distributor with an ohm meter for continuity first. The ignition module bolted to the side of the distributor is the most common item to fail. The ignition coil is the least likely to fail.
Most mechanics know to replace all three items when any one of them fails. I can't remember the reasoning behind that but I do remember hearing that at different classes I attended and the reason made very good sense at the time.
