OK sounds like you lost spark. To test that and compression at the same time. Go to the parts store and "rent" a compression tester and a spark tester (or if you plan on doing your own or friends cars buy them).

The spark tester gets hooked up between the spark plug wire and ground.
Turn the key and hold the throttle wide open. Have someone watch the spark tester and the compression gauge.
If they see no spark but the compression gauge goes up to 110-130 PSI, you don't have spark but the timing parts and engine are OK as the compression relies on those parts working. This engine uses a chain that doesn't fail often but they can.
Ignition wise a common failure is the crank position sensor. Not hard to replace, but you need to use a good scan tool to reset the sensors info.
