Transmission does not engage?

Yes, I was pulling into my driveway and was trying to park. I had to reverse to line up right when I went to put it back in drive the shifter would not catch but the car was in reverse. after trying a few times to shift it was just loose and not catching, so, I turned it off. Put rocks behind the tires so it won't roll. what do you think I should check first?

It sounds like the shift cable broke. I would have a helper shift through the gears, (parking brake on) while you look at the shift arm for movement, if not the cable is bad or one of the cable ends has fallen off their mount. Here is how to replace it and what to look for. I marked a red arrow in the diagram below what to watch. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
