Fuel pumps are very common on these trucks. I had one shut off just like that. I was pulling out of the park, drove about fifty feet, and it stalled. Towed it home, checked fuel pressure and it was around 10 psi (truck takes 60 psi to start and around 50 to run). Another one quit running when I went to leave work. It started and idled, I put it in gear and it stalled a few seconds later. Bad pump.
In short, start with checking fuel pressure. Here is a guide for that:

You can borrow the pressure gauge from AutoZone for a deposit (refunded when you return it).
If you really think it's not a fuel pressure issue, then you can get a spark tester (maybe $15.00 not part of the loan-a-tool program, so you have to buy it) and check the sparks. Here is a guide for that:
